Had a friend I respect tell me they passed on a startup b/c the founder was weird. Send me your weird founders. This is not a subtweet, I still respect my friend, they're a legend. Just a RFW, Request for Weird.

If you are a dreamer, never stop dreaming. If you are a realist, never stop getting real. Dreamers tend to judge realists for lacking foresight. Realists tend to judge dreamers for lacking precedent. Yet when we listen to each other, we can make dreams reality.

The personality of a startup often reflects the personality of the founders, and can change over time. Be thoughtful about you, because you set the company tone.

There's long form story to be written about how India flipped over last few years from place that had very bearish startup ecosystem to very bullish one Lots of discussions privately about causes. But surprised hasn't been picked up yet by publications

Early in my founder career I felt stabbed in the back every time a team member left. Now I feel happiness and pride. Your startup is a better university. Bet on people ahead of resume; leapfrog careers; impart skills, network, purpose; build alumni mafia.

# of employees is a vanity metric
When people visit your startup, they should be surprised how few people you have. A visitor who walks around and is impressed by the magnitude of your operation is implicitly saying "Did it really take all these people to make that crappy product?"

I’m officially testing too many mindfulness apps.

So many soul-less products out there. Nourishment of the soul is a universal human need. Free startup idea: An app that helps users believe in a higher purpose, make meaning of life, feel belonging, feel love, the way they want. Their own religion, not anyone else's.

Google Trends, “low carb” Peaks every Jan, drops like clockwork every year. PSA: August is when we really stop caring.

There is an optimal degree of remembering. Complete memory loss is terrible. Complete memory retention (hyperthymesia) is terrible. Imagine heartbreak never going away. There must be a happy medium. Has implications for AI. Also, for investing in startups.

Enlightenment can come from both failure and success. Failure seems to breed its own introspection. The thoughtful among us linger on our failures. Yet we rarely ask, “Why did we succeed?”.

E.G. See @webflow. $2.9M Seed round (initially less, but got topped up later). Got to profitably, kept doubling Y/Y, "suddenly" at >$20M ARR. Raised $72M "Series A" led by @Accel, one of the world's best VCs, at a growth round valuation.
There’s a new playbook available to startup founders who want to go big but run lean. Money, common infrastructure, even opex (via remote) are cheaper than ever. Raise Seed, get to break-even while keeping up growth, go straight to Series C (or IPO). Already happening.

We are entering the age of no-code visual development. The #nocode movement is unstoppable. Proud of @webflow on democratizing building great product experiences! Congrats @callmevlad @thesergie @bryantchou & team!!

Silicon Valley state of mind. At the end of every failed startup: That was a dream worth building.

Most people pick poor markets. If you have to ask yourself whether you have product market fit, you don't.
Replying to @mittal
If it doesn’t feel like the market is pulling you, it’s not. Consider if the friction in your business is a function of poor market picking vs poor execution. The best markets forgive horrific failures of execution.

Society is optimized in the present for the past. When you build the new, societal pressure nudges you down paths of consensus & external validation. Yet that’s not how you’ll build the future. Follow the paths of truth, even if you must initially move forward alone.

Never let yourself become jaded. Keep that optimism that got you started in the first place. The canvas is waiting.
