Hello, to anti-fascist and leftist around the world!☀️ #LeftistsOfTheWorldUnite
Today, I would like to tell you about the JCP’s members story who opposed the war before starting WW2 in Japan. Please watch 100 seconds video with English and Portuguese subtitles.
The Peace Preservation Law, enacted in 1925, was a law that punished associations and activities aimed at changing the “kokutai” (the national polity centered on the Emperor) or denying the system of private property.
From the outset, the Japanese Communist Party was its primary target. Under this law, the Special Higher Police (Tokkō) carried out widespread arrests and torture, serving to suppress voices opposing Japan’s wars of aggression.
Founded in 1922, the Japanese Communist Party opposed the absolute monarchy of the Emperor, advocated popular sovereignty and human rights, and also took a critical stance toward foreign military actions such as the Siberian Intervention and the suppression of Korean independence.
After the Manchurian Incident of 1931, it continued to call for opposition to the war through its newspaper Akahata (Red Flag), issuing appeals such as “Withdraw from China,” and distributed anti-war leaflets within the military. At a time when most other major parties supported or acquiesced in the wars of aggression, the Communist Party was effectively the only party that consistently and organizationally opposed them.
Regarding the scale of the repression, official government statistics put the number of people sent to prosecutors at approximately 100,000.
A specific example of a victim is Kobayashi Takiji (1903–1933). On February 20, 1933, he was arrested by the Tokkō and died at the Police Station. The police announced the cause of death as “heart failure,” but the body returned to his family showed clear signs of violence, including swelling throughout the body, internal bleeding, rope marks on the neck, and puncture wounds on the thighs. Testimony from friends and doctors has led to the widespread recognition that he was tortured to death.
Cases of women activists have also been recorded. One such person is Yamada Hisako (Hasegawa Toshiko, 1911–1998).
In prewar Japan, opposing the war under the Peace Preservation Law and the Tokkō was a life-threatening act. The torture, imprisonment, and deaths suffered by Communist Party members and those around them are supported by multiple testimonies, memoirs, the condition of bodies, and historical research.
The current leader is TAMUTOMO @tamutomojcp for this party and that’s why we can trust them in the fighting with far-right era.
