During a recent showing for a rental in San Francisco, Isabel Trew mentioned that she and her boyfriend were teachers. The real estate agent told her not to bother applying. The median rent for a one-bedroom was $4,400 a month as of late September. californiasun.co/newsletter/…

Panoche is a one-bar town surrounded by bleached hills along the eastern flanks of the Diablo Range — a place motorists pass on the way somewhere else. Only the tough survive there, including juniper, San Joaquin kit foxes, and a few hundred humans. californiasun.co/newsletter/…

I made an interactive map of every farm field in California! Inspired by the @Snapchat map! All 384k of them: lettuce in Salinas 🥬, cherries in Brentwood 🍒, dates in Coachella 🌴, and 1.6 million acres of almonds 🌰 Zoom into any field and see exactly what's growing there. I've been obsessed with maps from years of hiking and cycling. Models like Opus 5.5 / Astra making building with them so fun! Built on public crop data from @CA_DWR. Click to see growing near you? 👇

Talk about catching air! A massive pod of more than 2,000 dolphins was spotted off the coast of Newport Beach. The dolphins weren't just swimming along a boat, they were launching themselves completely out of the water.

An architect couple bought a Cold War-era radio tower in the Santa Monica Mountains and converted it into an event space. Its one of the most unusual structures of its kind in LA, with a swimming pool, gravel courtyard, and a 75-foot tower. californiasun.co/newsletter/…

This isn’t a direct quote from Trump, and I very much don’t think it’s a correct paraphrase. Trump has repeatedly argued that the consequences of the war, like higher gas prices, are a small price to pay compared to what an unchecked Iran could allegedly do. Last night, in especially rambling and incomplete fashion, he 1) claimed high prices are temporary and suggested they’re “artificial”; 2) contrasted that to the damage of Iran supposedly taking out a city; 3) and then, in especially confusing style, repeated his old point that “this,” as in the consequences of the war, is a small price to pay to avoid something like a a city being wiped out. It’s Trump’s fault you kinda have to be steeped in TrumpRallySpeak to know what he was saying last night, and of course you can say it’s inappropriate regardless for the president to casually float the possibility of a city being wiped out, but the context exists and is important.

Just did some number crunching using latest (Oct 1) ECMWF seasonal data, and I must say that I've never seen such high predictive confidence in a very wet California winter. This is a truly extraordinary forecast amid a record-strength El Niño event. [Thread: please read to end.]
