One thing we underestimate with authoritarian regimes is how they kill social initiatives. They methodically destroy a society's capacity to govern itself. Because a community that organises independently, that solves its own problems, that builds trust and takes initiative without asking permission, is a community that can also contest power. And that is the one thing an authoritarian regime cannot tolerate. So it does not just repress dissent. It makes dissent structurally impossible by making cooperation structurally impossible. It turns neighbours into suspects and makes every independent initiative a potential threat by ensuring that the only entity permitted to solve problems is the one creating them. The result is not just bad governance. It is often a society that has forgotten how to act together. And a people that cannot act together cannot remove those who have made them this way.
