Clarus started as a tiny spotted dog Susan Kare drew for the original Macintosh, but people couldn’t tell whether she was a dog or a cow... So Apple embraced the “dogcow,” whose call is “Moof!” She became a cult favorite through Mac printer dialogs, and Apple gave her an absurd official technical note explaining that dogcows hide by turning sideways because they’re two-dimensional. The joke grew into shirts, a beer, and a sculpture at Apple HQ... Moof became etched into Apple’s history.
