I did wake up every day at 5am for two months and then go outside and attempt a kind of half-jog where I listened to the Japanese Breakfast songs that make you want to cut yourself, Phoebe Bridgers, Mazzy Star, and Runaway by Kanye West on loop around my suburban neighbourhood. at 5:30 am there were still too many people and their dogs outside, to the point where sometimes if I could muster, id get up at 4 so when I ran outside it would feel like I was alone. when id get back home id take a nap at 9am. I still wanted 8 hours of sleep, but the sun sets at 10pm in the summer, so Id take a melatonin every night at 8pm. this was the summer I was studying for the MCAT, and the man who I prophetically, in a whole body sense, believed would seamlessly tumble down a secure line of inertia toward me, was overseas hoe'ing, and so I would do these types of things to myself. I also had a piece of graph paper that would list every hour of every day, and I derived great pleasure from filling in the boxes with a marker every time I checked the clock and remembered. though still, I was conscious of the fact that deriving pleasure from watching time waste away was probably a severe spiritual transgression. there is an Annie Ernaux quote that resonated with me during this time: "thanks to him, I was able to approach the frontier separating me from others, to the extent of actually believing that I could sometimes cross over it. I measured time differently, with all my body". I didn't have much back then. which is all to say that you should check up on your friends who've suddenly decided to take up running.

Yesterday, a lawyer on our behalf visited four physicians from Gaza currently detained at Ktzi’ot Prison: Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, Dr. Muhammad Ubaid, Dr. Murad Alkuka, and Dr. Akram Abu Odeh. All four are being held without charge.
All four physicians reported that there has been no improvement in either the quality or quantity of the inadequate food provided in prison. One physician reported losing 35 kilograms (77 pounds) over the past two years.
In recent months, the physicians have also reported being brought before court hearings during which their detention was extended indefinitely, despite no charges being filed against them. Two described hearings lasting only a few minutes and taking place without legal representation. They further stated that prison guards confiscate their mattresses every morning and return them only in the evening, forcing them to sit all day on the floor or on metal bed frames.
Two of the physicians said they need glasses after prison guards confiscated their own, yet repeated requests for replacements have been ignored. Two others reported medical issues that remain untreated. The physicians also described recurring outbreaks of skin diseases among the prison population.
Hygiene conditions remain dire. They are held in severe overcrowding, provided with only a single set of clothing that they are not able to wash, and denied access to cleaning supplies.
Following our petition to the High Court of Justice demanding the physicians’ release from unlawful detention, the state said it would submit its response within two weeks. PHRI calls for the immediate withdrawal of the arrest warrants against these physicians, and urges local and international organizations to take action to secure their release, so they may return home and resume their life-saving work.

The @HamidMurtada I knew never stopped advocating. He worked relentlessly, but pragmatically. He was rooted in his values. He never lost sight of what mattered.
I wish you knew him, and I wish @Jawharak_ didn't have to write this beautiful tribute so soon timep.org/2026/05/13/hamid-k…

As war broke out in Khartoum, Amira* was days away from giving birth. Three days into the conflict, she delivered her baby in a hospital in Bahri, Khartoum North, only to lose him hours later. Weakened from a painful caesarean section and left without medical care, she resorted to cleaning her wound with hand sanitizer—her only option for survival.
Jordanian artist Aya Mobayedeen illustrates Amira’s silent agony, shedding light on the overlooked crisis in Sudan, where mothers face war, grief, and the collapse of essential healthcare #IWD25

I saw someone of here say that no man believes he is mistreating a woman; rather, every man believes he is giving women exactly what they deserve. My brain hasn’t been the same since.
