I'm feeling this. Design has lost its culture.

Nippon Sangoku is the freshest anime I've seen in ages.

Unreasonably angry at this stupid looking Play button on the latest Spotify. Just hate everything about it.

If you watched MTV, VH1 or Fuse in the 2000's you saw Justin Harder's work many, many times.
This is his 2004 reel, and probably my single favorite design artifact of all time.
He's pretty lowkey these days, but his work blew EVERYONE away back then and he was one of the most copied designers of the decade (myself included).
IMO a lot of this stuff would still look fresh as hell if it came out today, and he definitely deserves his flowers for being such a huge part of that and era/aesthetic that so many people loved.
AFAIK he's not on here, so I can't tag him.
Between the Cavalry and Autograph news, I'm dreading all the uninformed "AE is COOKED" hot takes coming out today.

IT’S OUT! Head over to the Gorillaz YouTube channel now (link in bio) to watch the full film.
This film is a true love letter to the golden era of 2D animation. We worked incredibly hard alongside Jamie Hewlett to make it as period-accurate as possible and, like all our projects, it was hand-drawn by an incredible team of artists. We even used a variety of practical effects in the film, which was a lot of fun to do. We had a brilliant time making this film and learnt a huge amount while studying the masters of the 60s and 70s.
If you’ve been following the release of The Mountain, you know how special and meaningful this project is. We’re so proud to be a part of it and want to say a massive thank you to Jamie and Eleven Management for trusting us to tell this beautiful story. We couldn’t be prouder of the work we did together, and we're so happy to be sharing it with the world!

Adobe back tracking after the outrage. In the end Animate is still a dead end. I'd still look into Moho/Rive/ToonBoom/Smartly depending on what you used it for.
I just shared an update on Adobe Animate over on reddit (/r/adobeanimate), and given the conversations on X, wanted to also share here. Its a bit long, as there is a lot of info, so I also included a screenshot of the core info on Animate.
TLDR: We have made some changes to to our plans for Adobe Animate, and it will continue to be available for both new and existing users
Hey everyone, my name is Mike Chambers, and I work on the community team at Adobe (and am a long time Flash / Animate user). Yesterday, Adobe shared an email with Adobe Animate customers on the future of Animate. What we shared did not meet our standards and caused a lot of confusion and angst within the community. On behalf of Adobe, I want to apologize.
While an email to all Animate customers will go out shortly, I wanted to quickly share a few things: 1) our standard approach for applications in maintenance mode, 2) changes to our plans for Adobe Animate and its status, and 3) our commitments to ensuring that you always have access to your content, regardless of the state of development of an application.
Standard Approach for Applications in Maintenance Mode
If we deprioritize active development of an application, our approach is to move that application into maintenance mode with continued support. Under maintenance mode, the application will continue to be available, will continue to receive security and bug fixes, but will not get new features.
If we decide to go a step further and discontinue a product, we will work closely with the community to ensure they have adequate time to plan in order to minimize disruption and will take steps so that the community continues to have long-term access to their content.
Current State of Adobe Animate
Adobe Animate is in maintenance mode. While we are no longer adding new features to Animate, we will continue to support it and provide ongoing security and bug fixes. More importantly, Animate will continue to be available for both new and existing users. This is a change from what we communicated in the email yesterday for the status of Adobe Animate, its time-frame, and availability.
To be clear, we are not discontinuing or removing access to Adobe Animate and it will continue to be available to both existing and new customers.
Commitments for long-term content/file Access
For Adobe Animate, our commitment is to work with the community to ensure users continue to have long term access to their content, regardless of the state of development of the application.
On a personal note, as someone who started their career with Macromedia Flash 3 and Macromedia Generator, Adobe Animate has a special place in my heart. I know how frustrating and stressful this has been and we clearly could have handled and communicated this better. I might not have answers to everything, but I will try to answer any questions you might have.
With Adobe officially killing off Animate, let's pour one out for its original version. Macromedia Flash, you were amazing, you made the internet alive. Thanks for starting my career. R.I.P.

Reviving this account to say: Almost everyone at Vimeo was laid off yesterday, including the entire video team. If you're looking for talented engineers, there are a few on the market.
Sucks to see something I built killed by private equity in a technology company skin suit.
Big old juicy rant by @workbenchtv on the state of After Effects

Don't know if it was nostalgia or hearing another shop shutting down, but went on Wayback Machine to mograph.net from 2005 to try to find studios that had influenced me but I had almost forgotten — studios like Shilo, MK12, Freestyle Collective, Exopolis, Tronic, Troika .. lots more I'm sure but could only go back so many pages.
It's the nature of the beast, always has been, always will be, but it's still amazing to look back at some of the work being done back then and then it's just gone and in most cases probably forgotten.
I hope the people involved in those studios found something else to strike their passions, whether it was staying in motion design or transitioning to something different.
There are always ebbs and flows in life and in business and sometimes it's hard to stay positive when you're struggling to keep your head above the water when things are tough out there.
I have no idea where we're heading and how much of an impact AI will have, especially in the design world.
But I choose to keep working, no matter all of the noise surrounding us these days, and I choose to stay positive. A lot of people in my life are incredibly down right now & I'm doing my best to keep them up as well.
Get outside, take a walk, enjoy the sun, eat healthy, drink plenty of water, meet with friends — sometimes it's the little things that make it all worth while and help get you back on track.
