I’m thrilled to begin covering all things Texas Longhorns for the Austin American-Statesman. Big thank you to the @statesman crew for bringing me aboard.
Texas fans, please follow along and DM me to say hello! I'm here at DKR today, can’t wait to get started.
Btw, you can read about Matas Vokietaitis, Sean Miller, Bill Walton, body-fat measurements and more in this delightful preseason story from @ThomasJonesAAS

Sean Miller called out Matas Vokietaitis after a rough afternoon vs. St. John's at Madison Square Garden last month. Miller was more complimentary of his standout big man today, but offered another challenge after 37 games at Texas.
“This year he has more of a leadership role. ... He has to hold his end of the bargain up. Not that he has to score 20 points and get 10 rebounds every game, that's not what we're asking, but he has to have an amazing attitude, he has to compete at the highest level, he has to be ready at the opening tip.
"There's a certain level of leadership and expectation that Matas innately inherits based on who he is, the work that he's put in and really who he's become in this game."

Thought it was interesting Sean Miller said Matas Vokietaitis "got discouraged," against St. John's, and "needed a couple days" to work out of a funk after Texas' scrimmage against Rick Pitino's team.
Miller closed his comments on Vokietaitis by adding, "no head coach believes in a player more than I believe in Matas."
Texas head coach Sean Miller says he expects point guard Mikey Lewis to return from his right-foot injury in “mid-to-late December.”
Saint Mary’s transfer hurt his foot in a late-September practice, had surgery Oct. 1.

Steve Sarkisian on the 5 sacks, 8 additional carries and 1 bloody hand for Arch Manning against Mississippi State:
"I don't want [Manning] to have to endure that. I don't want a bloody hand and him getting sacked five times. That's not a recipe for success. Is he going to run it some? Yes. Do I think that's part of his game? Yes. But there's a line we got to be careful we don't cross over with him, because we need him as healthy as he can be moving forward."

Texas’ bruised quarterback isn’t its biggest concern at the moment, either.
Cam Coleman
Ryan Wingo
Hollywood Smothers
Graceson Littleton
Kade Phillips
All exited and did not return vs. Mississippi State due to injury. Select players began receiving treatment Saturday night.
More from Steve Sarkisian ⬇️ on an increasingly depleted Texas team, one now set to hit the road in back-to-back weeks.

🦈 Rasheem Biles said he had a conversation with Will Muschamp two weeks ago. Said he urged Muschamp to "let me loose," and let him "be a shark."
Muschamp's response: "I gotchu."
Each of the following players did not finish tonight’s game, per Steve Sarkisian:
Cam Coleman
Hollywood Smothers
Ryan Wingo
Graceson Littleton
Kade Phillips
Sarkisian said at least some of these players are already getting postgame treatment/attention in hopes of playing next week vs. Missouri.
Steve Sarkisian begins his press conference by shouting out Rasheem Biles’ dominant effort tonight.
Texas’ senior LB vs. Mississippi State:
8 tackles
4 TFL
3 sacks
1 forced fumble
And that will likely end Arch Manning’s night. Pretty clean performance despite plenty of Mississippi State hits:
16/20
220 yards
3 TD passes
0 INTs (1 lost fumble)
Texas carries through three quarters:
Arch Manning - 12
Longhorns RBs - 12
Also four sacks of Manning.
Replying to @mshap2
Arch Manning has six rushing attempts thus far, more than any Texas running back. Came up limping a bit after that 3rd down read option. He’s been battered and bruised by Mississippi State tonight.
Unsustainable.
