🎰 Happy #NationalLotteryDay, MS!
The winning numbers are in, & this is a jackpot we can all enjoy:
💰 $550+ million invested
🏗️ 250+ transportation projects
🛣️ 3,100+ miles of upgraded two-lane roads
🚗 Countless commutes improved
Why? Because those numbers sum up what MDOT has been able to do with net proceeds generated by the state lottery since the #MSleg passed the Alyce G. Clarke #MississippiLottery Law in a 2018 special session.
This year also brought another big win to celebrate when our legislature made the first $80 million in annual lottery proceeds going toward transportation infrastructure permanent by removing the sunset on MDOT's receipt of these funds. We're grateful for this investment in our state's future, & be sure to keep an eye out for all the projects the proceeds will continue to help fund. 💵🤝
Just take a peek at one such project pictured here: a mill-and-overlay project close to completion in Oktibbeha County. That'll be 10 miles of brand new State Route 389 from U.S. 82 to the Clay County line by the end of the summer, made possible by those lottery proceeds. 🤩
Thank you to everyone who's helped turn lottery proceeds into lasting improvements across the state. When Mississippi's roads improve, everybody wins! 🙌

ALT A green truck is unloading asphalt onto a section of State Route 389 being repaved in Oktibbeha County, assisted by another yellow construction vehicle. Orange traffic cones are placed around the construction area. The scene is bordered by trees and a white fence on what appears to be a rainy day.

In fiscal year 2025, $1.6 billion was invested into Mississippi's transportation system. That means there are work zones in every corner of our state.
I've proclaimed April 20 -24 as Work Zone Awareness Week in Mississippi.
Keep our workers safe by slowing down in a work zone!

Transportation and infrastructure form the foundation of Mississippi’s future. Over the past five years, we’ve invested record amounts in road, bridges, ports and rail. To the more than 2,600 employees at the Mississippi Department of Transportation, thank you for your tireless work to keep Mississippi moving forward.

Great insights at the #ARTBATIAC meeting from Reps. Trey Lamar (R-MS), Jim Pressel (R-IN), and Jake Fey (D-WA) on how recent legislative actions will help their states address infrastructure needs.

In 2022, we delivered historic tax cuts of $596 million, and now we are entering the second phase of major tax reform. The Senate’s tax plan is simple, but effective and sustainable. Grocery prices are too high, and you need relief. We want to incentivize work – not tax it. We need consistent, steady infrastructure funding, as it is the foundation of our economy and is in critical need of support. With the addition of our proposed plan, we will have cut taxes by over $1 billion since you hired me. I remain committed to delivering lasting financial relief for Mississippians while conservatively funding critical state services. Senator Harkins, Senator Hopson and the Senate have meticulously crafted our proposed next phase of tax relief, and I deeply appreciate their dedication. There’s important work ahead this session, and we are optimistic about a shared goal of reducing taxes.

Support has poured in for HB 1. Thank you to our state’s leading business champions, @MECStateChamber, @MSManufacturers, and @bipec, for applauding the House’s momentous effort to move the tax discussion to the forefront of the 2025 Legislative Session.

House Bill 1 is transformational in that it rewards the dignity of our people’s work by eliminating the income tax, it makes it easier to feed our families by slashing the grocery tax and it lays the foundation for the superhighway of Mississippi’s future business and commerce infrastructure all while helping our cities and counties meet the real needs of our citizens locally. Thank you @tatereeves for your strong support & leadership in helping us get this message to the people of Mississippi.
An update on Income Tax Elimination:
The House passed their version of Income Tax Elimination (HB1) by a vote of 88 yeas against only 24 nays TEN DAYS AGO.
So now, every Republican in the MS House is on record supporting elimination - with 9 House Democrats voting for elimination. Six (out of 8) statewide elected Republicans have publicly supported elimination.
The only question that remains- do Mississippi Senate Republicans want to vote for income tax elimination? In my private conversations with Senators, I can tell you that many of them definitely want to.
But everyone is waiting to see the promised plan from Lt. Governor Hosemann.
Will his plan eliminate the income tax??

Thank you for the strong support, Governor. We are FULLY committed to eliminating the income tax, reducing the tax burden at the grocery store, dedicating revenue to our infrastructure, and holding up the integrity of our state employee retirement system.
HB 1 is the result of a year’s worth of work and studying; receiving input from policy experts, other state legislators, and conversations with Mississippi taxpayers.
The House spent time out of session specifically on tax reform holding committee hearings, hosting our policy summit which included State Senators, and listening to the demands of Mississippians. We don’t need a legislative deadline to tell us the time is NOW!

I was excited to sit down with our state's business leaders at @bipec to share some insights about HB 1, the Build Up Mississippi Act! Mississippi's business community has led the charge on many key issues for our state. I look forward to receiving their support in the coming days.

Momentum is building. House Bill 1, the Build Up Mississippi Act, just cleared its first legislative hurdle passing out of the House Ways and Means Committee unanimously. It will now make its way to the floor in the House of Representatives for further presentation and debate. Build Up Mississippi will stimulate economic activity, support local governance, and ease financial pressures on Mississippians. @tlamar44
