OUR REVIEW:
dvdbeaver.com/subsite/film3/…
Luigi Zampa's The Monster is a rare beast: a giallo that is really a black-comedy indictment of the press, written by Sergio Donati as a nastier reworking of the story he felt Bellocchio's Slap the Monster on Page One hadn't gotten right. It opens with its hero walking out of Spasmo complaining the plot makes no sense, and it never loses that sardonic wink. Johnny Dorelli is excellent as the frustrated hack who becomes a monster nearly as bad as the one he's covering. Sydne Rome, in a small role, can also be seen in What?, and Some Girls Do. Mario Vulpiani's unglamorous, workaday photography suits the satire. He also shot The .44 Specialist, How to Kill a Judge, The Grand Duel, Dillinger Is Dead. Ennio Morricone's catchy, ironic score keeps the film humming. His massive other work includes Hitch-Hike, The Key, For a Few Dollars More, A Fistful of Dollars, Violent City, Grand Slam, Revolver, The Great Silence, Who Saw Her Die?, The Black Belly of the Tarantula, The Fifth Cord, Luna, Danger Diabolik, Two Mules For Sister Sara, A Bullet for the General, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, The French Conspiracy, U Turn, Stay As You Are, Short Night of Glass Dolls. The Radiance Blu-ray offers a superb 2K restoration from the original negative at a very high bitrate, lossless 24-bit mono, a new commentary, an hour and a quarter of interview and documentary material, and a substantial booklet. For a film that has never been available on home video outside Italy, this is an easy recommendation and one of the more unusual genre discoveries of the year.

OUR REVIEW:
dvdbeaver.com/subsite/film3/…
Takashi Miike's Visitor Q is one of the more distasteful films we have covered recently. It is a parade of incest, necrophilia, dismemberment and lactation gags, each designed to top the last, with its supposed satire of the Japanese home drama serving mostly as an alibi. It has its defenders, and a small, devoted cult, but very few viewers will find any reward on the other side of it. Kenichi Endo, seen in The Happiness of the Katakuris, Agitator, Nobody Knows, Demon Pond, Sakuran, Violent Cop, plays the pathetic father without winking, and Shungiku Uchida, from Gemini, gives the mother's transformation more conviction than the material deserves. Composer Koji Endō, who scored Agitator, Rainy Dog, Ley Lines, Audition, 13 Assassins, Gozu, The Bird People in China, The Happiness of the Katakuris, Three... Extremes, Sukiyaki Western Django, The City of Lost Souls, uses his music sparingly here, and cinematographer Hideo Yamamoto, who shot Graveyard of Honor, The Happiness of the Katakuris, Audition, The Bird People in China, Fireworks, works within the flat, harsh limits of consumer digital video. The Radiance Blu-ray, transferred from the original master beta tape with a very high bitrate, is surely the best this source can look, and it comes with a Tom Mes commentary, new interviews with Miike, Endo and Showko Nakahara, a Kat Ellinger visual essay, and handsome limited-edition packaging. For Miike completists and devotees of transgressive cinema, this is the definitive edition. For everyone else, the film itself is very difficult to recommend.

OUR COMPARISON:
dvdbeaver.com/subsite/film3/…
Venom is a lean, nasty little hostage thriller with an improbable marquee - and a gift for anyone who loves watching larger-than-life actors circle each other in tight quarters. The deadly mamba strikes almost exclusively at the guilty, lending an old-fashioned sense of justice beneath the exploitation trappings. Susan George (Straw Dogs, Sudden Terror, Tintorera, Fright, Die Screaming Marianne, Enter the Ninja, The Strange Affair, The Sorcerers, Mandingo, Up the Junction, Jack the Ripper) is the film's secret weapon as Louise, the sly, calculating maid who is both bait and brains of the inside job - and her encounter with the mamba is the film's most skin-crawling set-piece. Oliver Reed (The System, Revolver, The Assassination Bureau, The Curse of the Werewolf, Crossed Swords, The Party's Over, Ten Little Indians, Z.P.G., The Triple Echo, Dante's Inferno, The Brigand of Kandahar, The Devils, Hired to Kill, The Great Scout and Cathouse Thursday, These Are the Damned, The Debussy Film, The Scarlet Blade, Women in Love, Tommy, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Sword of Sherwood Forest, The Hunting Party, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Pirates of Blood River, Burnt Offerings, The Brood, Paranoiac, Farewell, My Lovely, Take a Girl Like You) and Klaus Kinski (The Great Silence, Double Face, Aguirre, the Wrath of God, Haine, Creature with the Blue Hand, Woyzeck, Cobra Verde, Nosferatu the Vampyre, Fitzcarraldo, Crawlspace, Pleasure Girls, Bang! Bang! You're Dead!, A Bullet for the General, For a Few Dollars More, The Cats, Grand Slam, Slaughter Hotel, Madame Claude, The Counterfeit Traitor, Count Dracula) famously loathed each other, and that genuine ill will crackles in every exchange between the volatile chauffeur and the contemptuous terrorist. Sterling Hayden (The Killing, The Asphalt Jungle, Naked Alibi, Terror in a Texas Town, Flat Top, 5 Steps to Danger, Denver and Rio Grande, The Outsider, Dr. Strangelove, Crime of Passion, The Long Goodbye) lends a craggy dignity as the grandfather, Nicol Williamson (The Reckoning, The Human Factor, The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, The Wilby Conspiracy, Excalibur, Black Widow) brings a clipped, chess-player calm to the siege outside, and Sarah Miles (Ryan's Daughter, The Hireling, Hope and Glory, The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea, The Servant, She Played with Fire, Loving Walter) is the toxicologist pulled into the nightmare. Piers Haggard (Quatermass, The Blood on Satan's Claw) stepped in for Tobe Hooper at short notice and delivered a taut, efficient thriller, beautifully lensed by Gilbert Taylor (The Bedroom Window, Dracula, The Omen, Frenzy, A Day at the Beach, Cul-de-sac, Repulsion, A Hard Day's Night, Dr. Strangelove, Yield to the Night, The Dam Busters, Seven Days to Noon, The Outsider) and scored by Michael Kamen (The Dead Zone, Mona Lisa, Polyester, Road House, Company Business, Event Horizon, Brazil). Blue Underground's 4K UHD is a substantial upgrade - a new 4K restoration from the interpositive with restored grain, re-timed color, deeper contrast, a new Atmos mix, a second commentary and four new interviews. Even the included Blu-ray is a significant improvement over the decade-old release. Certainly recommended to the right crowd.
