I love this scene because it illustrates the difference between appearing charitable and actually being charitable. You can criticize just how harsh Maomao dealt with this girl, but whether you like it or not, there's genuine charity in what she did. Mind you, this entire charade is markedly different from how Maomao typically treats people. Her approach was deliberately tailored to this girl and her circumstances, rather than being some indiscriminate display of cruelty. When you're faced with a ridiculously unfair situation, sometimes there are no good options, only better and worse ones. And sometimes, charity involves recognizing that the person you're helping isn't helpless. Maomao recognized her intelligence and determination rather than simply reducing her to an object of pity. She challenged her and ultimately gave her the means to help herself. Too often, I see people confuse charity with doing whatever makes themselves feel compassionate. But genuinely willing the good of another person doesn't always look or feel compassionate. Sometimes, doing what's best for someone means you're going to look like the villain.
