The "authoritarian pivot" occurs when the populist strongman no longer requires a pretense of popular support to maintain control of state power.
Buckminster Fuller, who was wrong about a lot of things in a way that was usually more interesting than other people being right, noticed something in the 1930s that still holds true.
He noticed that technology does not primarily get bigger. It gets thinner.
The transatlantic cable got lighter per unit of message. The building got lighter per unit of enclosed volume. The engine got lighter per unit of horsepower. Each generation of a technology tends to accomplish the same function with less stuff, and then with less stuff again, until at the limit the stuff approaches zero and only the function remains.
He called this ephemeralization : doing more and more with less and less until eventually you can do everything with nothing.
And here were it gets interesting. What got eaten, in the first wave, was objects: my door key became a fingerprint.
What's happening today is the second wave: the AI paradigm shift. It’s our thought patterns, our decisions, our generative processes, our creativity, and our communication and coordination with each other that is being ephemerized.
And I think judgment abstraction has two consequences.
First, the output is not checkable at a lower cost than producing it. To verify a summary you must read the document. To verify a strategic recommendation you must do the strategy. The thing that made calculators safe (verification being orders of magnitude cheaper than generation) simply does not hold for the class of work being absorbed now. Which means verification won't happen because the economics forbid it. A check that costs as much as the work is not a check. It's a second attempt.
Second, the stairs are being removed as a consequence of using the lift. The way you stay able to judge a draft is by having written drafts. The capability is maintained by its own exercise and by nothing else. So the fallback and the thing it's a fallback for are the same muscle, and the system that replaces the muscle also stops the training.
This is Lisanne Bainbridge's irony of automation, which she wrote down in 1983 and which the aviation industry spent the next forty years rediscovering at great expense: automate the easy 99% and you have designed a job where a human with no recent practice must handle the hardest 1% with no warm-up, at the worst possible moment, on the basis of a mental model the automation has been maintaining on their behalf.
Airlines eventually responded by mandating hand-flying. No knowledge-work organization on earth currently mandates hand-thinking.

recall how American presidents did not want to lose in Vietnam--Johnson did not want to be, in his words, the first US president to lose a war.
so the Vietnam War continued for--was it six years?--after a study by McNamara showed that it could not be won.
all. those. lives. lost. to "save face" for the American president(s) & their teams.
BREAKING: Trump could be more likely to launch a major military operation against iran if republicans suffer a crushing defeat in the midterm elections, fearing humiliation and he will be "embarrassed" in front of the world, a US official told Axios.
He also said that Netanyahu is currently lobbying Trump to launch a joint operation immediately after the election.

Pretty soon, you’re going to start to hear people tell you that it’s time to move on. They’ll say that accountability is too divisive, too hard, too costly.
But here at The Rule of Law Project, we know that the rule of law is not self-executing. It is a culture sustained by the shared expectation that the law binds and protects everyone.
Rebuilding that culture will take successful prosecutions. But it will take more than that. It will take a public that demands accountability, and elected officials who are committed to “a government of laws, not of men.”
That’s why The Rule of Law Project is committed to winning the argument that criminal conduct by public officials must carry criminal consequences — and that no one, regardless of badge, office, or influence, is above the law.
listened to a podcast about the end of the world back in 2018 and the guy said something that stuck with me:
if you gave everybody in the world a button that instantly destroyed the planet when pressed, how long do you think we'd last? a minute? a second? probably less, right?
Anyway we're getting closer to that.
Remember when the hyenas realised all the promises Scar made to them were lies, and he’d destroyed every semblance of normalcy and stability, so they turned around and ate him? Just pointing that out for absolutely no reason at all.

Cowardly republicans are HOPING they get whooped so they can finally stand up to Trump and say privately what they’ve wanted to for years.
The rest of the country is optimistic but cautious because we’ve seen just how stupid a lot of our peers are over and over again.

I feel like Jared Kushner being at the center of the plot that ultimately led to an American journalist being dismembered via bone saw while he was still alive should be a much bigger deal than our billionaire owned news media is making of it.

Perhaps people have forgotten or were too young to remember but when conservatives swear to you that Obama was a divisive president, it’s because of stuff like this. He would say the most innocuous thing and we would get days of “Dem elitist” commentary from conservative media and pundits.
Again, it’s not lost on me that Obama compared Trump’s taste to that of Saddam Hussein in the same breath, and that Trump literally said he didn’t care about high gas prices the same day, yet none of that broke through. Because perceived threats to white cultural hegemony are actually what most of the last 10 years of politics have been about.
It’s the same reason why a Democrat’s career would be over for trashing Toledo, Ohio, why we still talk about Hillary’s “deplorables” gaffe, but Republicans say awful things about America’s largest cities and deny them federal funds and there’s barely a whimper of outrage.
the cheesecake factory discourse a back to the future reminder of what 2008-2016 was like on here. Obama makes funny joke revealing he's like the average American (fluent enough in gaudy chain restaurants to jest about a specific chain). GOPers decide it means he's not #oneofus. This goes on for days...

If Trump actually goes through with some big midterm stealing stunt next week, every conservative organization involved should eventually be investigated, shuttered, and reduced to the studs, whether that’s Claremont, Heritage, or whatever. The right walked away from J6 feeling like it could essentially stage a coup with minimal consequences. That has to change if this happens. The repercussions have got to be brutal for everyone involved, or it’s just going to keep happening.

What's especially stunning about this is it presents Americans with the easiest imaginable vote we've ever taken in our lives, as the same party that is now a Nazi party is also the most corrupt party in American history, running our economy into the ground, and stealing from us.

We have not yet begun to understand the near-term implications of this grotesque folly by Donald Trump, Pete Hegseth, and the entire Republican Party

if there isn't disproportionate, life-destroying criminal sanction for the people responsible for this in 2029 there will just never be a non-partisan bureaucratic apparatus ever again. I've seen this happen a couple times in a couple places- it just doesn't come back.
SCOOP: The State Dept has started asking career diplomats up for promotion if they voted for Trump in 16, 20, 24.
Federal law prohibits politically based hiring for career staff.

A lot has been made of “declaring martial law.” I don’t see the point; the real nightmare scenario, the one that should keep you up at night, is the one where the suspension of the Constitution requires no such thing, and people carry on with their lives, going to Costco, celebrating the holidays, then waiting until January to see if we maybe still have a country, or what.
Compliance and apathy of the same grade observable by people waiting to see if that new chicken chain their cousin likes is going to open at the mall.

We need to pause and focus on exactly who was killed during Trump’s throttling of Starshield. Names and histories. Treat them like victims in a murder case—because they are.
When the investigations happen, we need to be able to remind ourselves who died because of Trump’s order.

There’s really no difference between the Ilhan Omar raid and MAGA’s Talarico flu panic.
They have idiots like Nick Sortor create right-wing propaganda and use bot networks to spread it. Then they abuse government agencies, using that propaganda as justification to investigate their enemies, hoping to bleed them of money or find embarrassing material.
Either way, it feeds the MAGA content machine with no downside to them.

It looks like Putin told Trump that Ukraine was causing high gas prices, a lie that is convenient for Trump. Obviously it’s Trump’s war in Iran that is the issue. But Trump can’t accept that.
So now Trump wants to give Putin a lot of money for Russian diesel, which won’t do anything to markets and won’t even help him in the midterms, though I bet Putin told him it would.
But since Russia and Iran are allies, the shift in US policy and any US taxpayer money that Trump gives Putin will help both the Russian war on Ukraine as well as the regime in Iran. Trump got his pocket picked as usual but the money is ours and the deeper price is the visible shift of US policy to support Russia’s war of aggression.
In other words, Trump makes the world more dangerous by extending two wars and gets nothing in return, not even for himself (unless there was a side deal, which can’t be ruled out).
