SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

Patrick Stewart wanted to play Othello because it was his favorite Shakespeare play, but he didn't want to wear blackface, so he did a production where Othello is the only white character.

I hate that neurotypicals have minimised neurodivergent struggles by watering down our terms. This is why they don’t see it as disabling. They think overstimulation is just being overwhelmed, they think non verbal is going quiet for a bit. Just annoying and unhelpful.

If you have ADHD in the UK at the moment it feels like every single day you have to read yet more misleading headlines and then the resulting commentary from people who seem to despise our very existence and it's so utterly, utterly demoralising and upsetting to just have no way to push back – at Winsford, England

It’s been quite alarming as a newly diagnosed person tonight watching him bow out after hitting his limit and getting hate online for it
some people are being so cruel to james, he is autistic and never wanted to be a traitor.. it was clearly eating him alive, they caught him anyway, there’s no need to be so nasty about it, and call him names, it’s a game show, chill the fuck out #CelebrityTraitors

cognitive inflexibility is a common symptom of autism btw. I think you all need to learn to be kinder to autistic people and stop calling him “wet cats” or “pathetic” because he signed up to do a show for CHARITY #CelebrityTraitors
people forgetting that james acaster is autistic and has clearly been having a really tricky time in the castle. double empathy problem at its finest #celebritytraitors

every time I get a new interest I feel I lose more of myself because I try to emulate what I’m interested in, so I’m like 23 years into life and I feel I don’t have a clear identity - I’m every person I’ve ever admired but yet to be me

Unfortunately catching out James Acaster has made Micheal Sheen fall into full actor psychosis and he’s now delivering a teary eyed monologue, staring at the stars, convinced he’s going to die in real life #CelebrityTraitors
