Meet Ptychagnostus cuyanus, an agnostid arthropod from the mid-Cambrian Marjum Fm. of Utah. Articulated exoskeletons of this species are the most common fossils at the Gray Marjum Lagerstätte, but, strangely enough, it took me years to realize just how beautiful they are! 😍 ⚒️

If it stayed framed as "here is an illustration of this hypothesis" (regardless of whether it is well supported), we'd have no problem, but the context is usually lost, usually ending in people acting entitled & know-it-all towards those who actually did take the time to evaluate

The next inevitable stage is parts of the community hounding other palaeoartists with "why didn't you make it look like this, INACCURATE", assuming that the above trend reflects a consensus, when it's often likely that said artist did look into the matter further, and disagreed.

Call me a grumpy spoilsport, but I do often wish that people would take a little more time to read and critically evaluate a new study before jumping on the "OMG, xyz thing confirmed!" train accompanied by new or reposted palaeoart.

I think a lot of young paleoartists really need to learn that their knowledge about something doesn’t mean much if they can’t share it calmly and respectfully. Obsessing over and belittling other artists that you disagree with is weird and off-putting.

「『誰がやっても答えは同じ』だから理系の研究に興味が持てない」、という意見は、理系の範囲をずいぶん狭くみているのではないかなあと思ったり。実際には、例えば生物学だと「自分がやらなきゃ誰も自分が生きているうちに答えを出さない」問題がゴロゴロしているわけで。
