The long journey begins! Returning to Australia for the first time since I moved to Denmark. First, a conference in Canberra. Then, two weeks in Melbourne - by all accounts enjoying much the same weather as back here in Copenhagen! ☂️
I had the same experience at a recent conference, when I discovered I could use a touchscreen to navigate through my slides. Felt like I was doing CNN election night coverage.

Denmark goes to the polls tomorrow (1 June), voting in a referendum on European defence cooperation. 👉
🧵New episode tomorrow, not of #Borgen, but of Denmark's long history of holding referenda on EU-issues. Ninth referendum; present score 5-3 to the yes-side. Referendum tomorrow on EU defence opt out 1/7 bit.ly/3wQsSjy @thinkeuropa @ecfr

Fellow PhD students in social/economic history! This year, @LuEconHist is hosting ESTER's research design course! I participated last year, and can highly recommend it: a great opportunity for early-stage candidates to get useful input on their projects. posthumusinstitute.org/ester…
Viewed from abroad (and now living in a country where there is public debate about actual issues), the shallowness of Australian politics is striking. There is a near-exclusive focus on the trivial. Australia is the home of Seinfeld elections - votes about nothing.

I'm perhaps biased, but I reckon my department does some fantastic work on questions of long-term economic development. Including these two exciting opportunities for aspiring PhD students. ehl.lu.se/nyheter/two-new-ph…
I recognise the concern here. The dynamics of a Zoom seminar are totally different, with typically less audience interaction than in-person seminars. Happily, my experience is that returning to in-person seminars has also meant a return to lively discussion with good feedback.

Putin: “The special operation in Ukraine is going according to plan and in full compliance with the timetable. All tasks set during the special operation in Ukraine are being accomplished successfully.”
That panic merchants are going ballistic is perhaps the best possible endorsement of the prudent and responsible course Denmark (and Scandinavia more widely) are now following.
MY GOD—Danish 🇩🇰 political leaders have completely lost their frigging minds releasing all #COVID19 mitigations — these are exponentially ⬆️ surging DEATHS not cases!!! This is what happens when a country’s leaders gaslights its own citizens. #CovidIsNotOver

The first episode of the new season of Borgen has just aired on Danish TV. And I'm pleased to report, it's off to a brilliant start. Welcome back Birgitte Nyborg!
The series will screen internationally on Netflix, which has jumped on board as a co-producer.
In a great advertisement for 21st century postal service efficiency, I just received a birthday card from my parents - *only* three months after they sent it!
His performance of "Four Seasons in One Day" was no doubt the giveaway.
EXCLUSIVE: Rudy Giuliani was last week unmasked as an exiting costumed contestant in the taping of the first episode of #TheMaskedSinger. We hears that as soon as they saw Giuliani, judges Ken Jeong & Robin Thicke quickly left the stage in protest deadline.com/2022/02/rudy-gi…
A fantastic overview of Denmark's corona management here at the start of 2022, and why the country has today waved goodbye to restrictions despite record high infection rates.
Today's big news from Denmark: all corona restrictions, including limits on nightlife and requirements for facemasks, will expire at the end of January. From February, corona will (again) no longer be classified as a critical threat under the country's epidemic law.
The combination of vaccines, better treatments and the milder omicron variant means that the relationship between infections and serious illness/ death has been severed. That decoupling means that concerns about health system capacity - the basis for restrictions - have abated.
