1st ever Piraeus event coming up next Monday at noon in Nashville! Looking forward to hosting the discussion with these 5 great group leaders.
🚨 UPDATED
Excited to announce that The Piraeus will be teaming up with Oyarsa to host our 1st ever in-person event Monday, October 19 at noon in Nashville (afternoon of the 4th Thiel lecture)!
"Building on the Cultural Frontier" will be a lunch and panel discussion featuring leaders from our rapidly growing grassroots movement—citizen activists, independent scholars, and entrepreneurs working to revitalize Western culture and education outside of mainstream institutions.
The panel will introduce you to these leaders and their projects, discuss their visions for the future, and show you how to get involved.
Nick Gallo (@nickmgallo) will lead the discussion with the following panelists:
FROM NASHVILLE:
➤ Davis Hunt (@vrgldh), founder of The Pamphleteer (@realpamphleteer ), "Nashville's Alt-Daily," that aims to combat corporate and progressive media domination, and, through its in-person events, connect Nashville's citizen activists. Davis will discuss his vision for building grassroots coalitions, facilitating local civic engagement, and inspiring citizen activists in other cities.
➤ Warren Steury(@NWSteury), founder of Meriwether Academy (@meriwetheracdmy), a Nashville-based men's group dedicated to reviving the ideal of the American man. Warren will discuss his vision for building men's civic organizations and boys' schools centered around classical and outdoor education.
FROM OUT OF STATE:
➤ Michael Millerman (@millerman), founder of The Millerman School, an online school of political philosophy that teaches Strauss, Heidegger, Plato, and others, to discuss his vision of enriching political and philosophical discourse outside academia.
➤ Paul McNeil (@pbdmcniel), founder of The Wagon Box Inn (@thewagonbox) in Story, Wyoming, to discuss his vision of connecting online communities at real-world hubs, like the Wagon Box, which can serve as a model for similar projects across the country.
➤ Tyler Mathews (@tchevezmathews), founder of Oyarsa (@oyarsanetwork), a St. Louis-based men's group to discuss his vision of connecting grassroots cultural groups with local business owners and entrepreneurs, and how St. Louis can serve as a model for other cities.
Light lunch will be served before the panel, which will be followed by a social hour to connect with others before the Thiel event.
Paid subscribers to The Piraeus and members of Oyarsa get a 20% discount code.
Look forward to seeing you all there!

Claude is pretty useless when the code you're trying to write has never been written before.

Giant cash machines like Meta and Google are now negative cash flow; OpenAI and Anthropic have been from the start.* (*With the arguable exception of one anomalous quarter with a big subsidy.)
There is at least an 80% chance that this will turn out to be the greatest capital misallocation in history.

Great work by @NickMGallo and @ThePiraeus in the world of grassroots cultural movements across America. An honor to be invited to the conversation.

I have no idea why renaming AI is so bizarrely important to Trump. Nobody cares about the name he chose. Nobody is using it or will use it. And it’s not even technically accurate because “super intelligence” already had an agreed upon, widely adopted definition. This is the weirdest political hill to die on. It gains you nothing. Not a single ordinary American in the country, anywhere, cares deeply about making sure people say “SI” instead of “AI.” We are days away from a major election and this bullshit is the focus? Just baffling.

In the DC area next week? C'mon down to Butterworth's!
TECH HALLUCINATIONS — AI Psychosis is the New Acid Casualty
Tuesday, Oct. 27 | Butterworth's
Doors at 6pm. My talk starts 7pm.
Psychedelic drugs were a heady inspiration for tech culture. Over the years, we learned Steve Jobs was dropping acid. We heard Timothy Leary riffing on the internet. We had Terrence McKenna tapping the hallucinatory space for visions of our coming transhuman future.
Today, artificial intelligence is a total head trip. Early AI-generated images resemble the dream-like scenes any psychedelic user would be familiar with. As more and more people begin to converse with chatbots in intimate ways—sometimes losing the distinction between digital outputs and their own thoughts—it's clear that AI psychosis is the new acid casualty.
Join us for a sobering romp through the psychedelic origins of digital technology.

🚨ALERT: The editors of the journal Men and Masculinities will no longer allow authors to refer to individuals as being "male."
If an author uses the term, they should "specify which dimension(s) of sex are at issue, since sex itself refers to several only loosely correlated dimensions rather than a single underlying fact."
For example, trans-identifying male swimmer Lia Thomas must be referred to as a woman, and his maleness, if mentioned at all, must be attached to specific traits, like genitals, hormones, and chromosomes.
You cannot call Lia Thomas a "male" in this journal, but a woman with "male genitals" and "male sex chromosomes."
The first author of this editorial—the Managing Editor of Men and Masculinities, Tristen Kade—is a woman who identifies as a man.
The model of biological sex this editorial is pushing is what I refer to in my scholarly article "Why There Are Exactly Two Sexes" as the "multi-level" sex model. This model is not merely wrong—it is self-refuting.
From my article:
"Traits are labeled 'male-typical' or 'female-typical' only because they correlate with organisms already identified as male or female—an identification that, in anisogamous species, is made ultimately by reference to gametes."

Wow, over 1,000 mathematicians have now joined the Association for Human Mathematics (AHM), committing to:
> NOT publish AI generated math papers
> NOT work with frontier labs
> 654 of them went even further to NOT even use AI in their research, at all

After many false starts and delays, my book The Independent Scholar has now been typeset and is being emailed to all who preordered.
Just about everyone today assumes that to produce a lasting body of work, one must pass through a "credible" institution and secure a certain kind of job, patron, publisher, or grant.
But the historical record shows otherwise.
Twas much harder than I anticipated, and I'm all too aware of its remaining imperfections, but overall I'm pleased with the result.

My other "criticism" of Thiel is his hostility or, worse, indifference to "inwardness," which can be as exaggerated and one-sided as "Woodstock" ( forgivable because it does set the neglected alternative apart, but ultimately untenable for an account of the whole/our place in it)

A real pleasure to host another gathering last night for @meriwetheracdmy .
It was our first workshop-format and I think it went really well.
We have a men’s backpacking trip coming up Nov 21-22 and are soon to announce a very grand event in early December. Keep your eyes peeled!

Excellent thread on why telling AI agents to do things in natural language is no guarantee that they will do what they want.
(There is also a section about this in Rebooting AI in 2019, and it is remarkable how little the basic situation has changed!)

Also, big thanks to @NickMGallo of @ThePiraeus for bringing me in to help organize the panel before the final lecture. It was a great turnout with standing room only. The quality of the people in the room was incredibly high.
