Thank you for raising this. The issue of Nigerian families affected by social services interventions in the UK has been of grave concern to NiDCOM. The Commission under our able Chairman/CEO, @abikedabiri has already intervened in a number of cases, working closely with the Nigerian High Commission in the UK. Our records indicate that almost 100 families have been affected. Kindly send further details via DM so we can engage the Nigerian High Commission and explore additional ways this matter can be addressed. Thank You.
Mama Diaspora, This is coming late, but as they say, it's better late than never; I was in Paris over the weekend, and it is relatively peaceful. I would like to use this medium to call your attention to what is happening in the UK; we should be proactive to avoid a nearly similar occurrence in France. There are many parents whose children have been taken away by social services who have reached out to the commission and the Nigerian embassy to see if they can have their kids released to them, but no one is responding. This calls for urgent attention, and I am ready to provide more information if needed. A recent case involves a four-day-old child taken from their parents for fear of being circumcised. 4 DAY OLD CHILD 💔 Thanks to @stwenactus and @NCUKCommunity For providing immediate support to the parents: we need your urgent attention on this, our children are losing it! @nidcom_gov @abikedabiri @segalink @NGRSenate @jimidisu

PRESS RELEASE NiDCOM HAILS DIASPORA REMITTANCES, INVESTMENTS, CITES REFORM CONFIDENCE ABUJA, NIGERIA - OCT. 20, 2026. The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has applauded Nigerians in the Diaspora for their contributions to the Nigerian economy, as monthly remittance inflows approach $1 billion, underscoring their commitment to national development and confidence in the country’s economic reforms. The commission also commended them for their investments in the country which has surged in the last few years. The Commission noted that the removal of the fuel subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu were difficult but necessary decisions to address longstanding economic distortions. While the road taken over the last three years has not been easy, NiDCOM noted that Nigeria’s external reserves, now approaching $60 billion, and rising remittance inflows are encouraging developments. Beyond remittances, Nigerians in the Diaspora have continued to invest in Nigeria, particularly in healthcare, agriculture, the food industry and information and communication technology (ICT). These investments support businesses, create employment and bring valuable expertise into the country. To encourage more of such investments, NiDCOM continues to engage Nigerians in the Diaspora through platforms such as the annual National Diaspora Day celebrations and the Nigerian Diaspora Investment Summit. The recently held Nigeria Diaspora Economic Conference (NIDEC) in Canada also brought Nigerians together to explore investment opportunities, build business relationships and discuss ways of directing more Diaspora resources towards Nigeria’s economic growth. The Chairperson/CEO of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended Nigerians in the Diaspora for continuing to support their families and invest in their homeland despite the challenges of the past few years. She urged them to sustain their contributions, noting that their investments and remittances are helping to keep businesses running, support households and open up opportunities for more Nigerians. NiDCOM said it would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to strengthen engagement with Nigerians in the Diaspora and make it easier for them to invest in the country. The Commission expressed optimism that with sustained reforms and greater private sector participation, more Nigerians abroad would find viable opportunities to bring their ideas, skills and resources home. E-signed. Abdur-Rahman Balogun Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, (NIDCOM), Abuja.
Peter Obi Clarifies Remark on Diaspora Remittances NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has clarified his remarks after telling Nigerians abroad to stop sending money to relatives who beg for it. Peter Obi said his message was twisted by political opponents adding that he respects the diaspora, whose remittances pay for school fees, hospital bills, rent and food, and that he never asked them to abandon their loved ones. Dabiri-Erewa replies Livinus Victor, It is time for journalism veterans to bring back professionalism, ethics and dignity Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), has replied Mr. Livinus Chibuike Victor, noting that his focus should be on working with veterans and trained journalists to champion the return of ethical, responsible and professional journalism. Dabiri-Erewa acknowledged the genuine concerns of Victor that there is a huge problem plaguing journalism practice in Nigeria. Adding however that his call for an apology is totally misplaced and utterly irrelevant. It will be recalled that while she was in the Parliament (2003-2015) as Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Media, she championed the introduction of the Journalism Enhancement Bill, in 2010,which was aimed at setting standards to enhance the standards of the journalism profession. She argued that the criteria for any profession, like medicine, law, Accountancy etc., was absent in journalism , thus making it possible for just anyone to lay claims to being a journalist without any form of training or certification. Unfortunately, the move was resisted by those that should have supported it, and today the dignity of journalism is now being clearly eroded. She called on the writer to focus more on working with veterans to join hands and champion the return of ethical journalism, than seeking for an apology that he will never get , because the erosion of standards is glaring. She noted with satisfaction that it is the journalism profession that nurtured and trained her, recalling the tutelage and mentorship she got from outstanding lecturers at the Mass Communication department, University of Lagos , and said she will be glad to join the writer and other veterans in the industry willing to deal with the challenges, which the writer himself alluded to in his write up. She called on the NUJ, Guild of Editors and other media professionals not sit back and watch this esteemed profession denigrated. E- Signed. Abdur-Rahman Balogun (mnipr) Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, NIDCOM, Abuja.

Happy 66th Independence Day to Nigerians in the Diaspora. Sixty-six years ago, Nigeria claimed her freedom. Today, that freedom is carried in every city where a Nigerian works, builds, heals, teaches, creates, and refuses to shrink. To you in the diaspora: you are not an afterthought of the nation. You are one of its strongest extensions. Your remittances keep households standing. Your skills raise Nigeria’s name in boardrooms, laboratories, hospitals, and studios. Your voice, and your investment still shape the country you left but never left behind. We honour the courage of our founding fathers, and we honour you, who continue their work from afar. Distance has not diluted your stake. It has sharpened it. On this 66th anniversary, hold your head high. Wear the green-white-green without apology. Let unity, not division, be the story you tell about home. And know that NiDCOM stands with you: to protect your interests, open doors for your talent, and keep the bridge between Nigeria and her children abroad open and strong. May this Independence Day renew your pride, your purpose, and your faith in a greater Nigeria. Happy Independence Day. Nigeria lives, at home and in you. From Hon. Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa OON, Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM)

PRESS RELEASE NIDCOM CLARIFIES POSITION ON “NIDO WORLDWIDE” ABUJA, NIGERIA – SEPT. 29, 2026 – The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) wishes to clarify its position on the purported body presenting itself as “NIDO Worldwide”. The Commission states unequivocally that “NIDO Worldwide”, as currently presented by certain individuals, is not a duly constituted body with the authority to speak for all Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) chapters across the world. NIDO was established as a non-political, non-governmental organisation to serve as an umbrella body for Nigerians in the Diaspora, with country and continental structures. Over the years, however, the organisation has been plagued by leadership disputes, factionalisation and fragmentation within some of its structures. In several countries, NIDO does not exist at all, while other credible and recognised Diaspora organisations operate effectively and efficiently. The Commission notes that one Mr. Chibuzor Ubochi, who purports to be the leader of “NIDO Worldwide”, is in fact a factional Chairman of one of the Continental Chapters and currently has a pending court case against him in that regard. Consequently, NiDCOM strongly advises the Federal Government of Nigeria, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), and Nigerian Missions abroad to exercise extreme caution and avoid falling victim to a phantom organisation calling itself “NIDO Worldwide”. NiDCOM is concerned about the lingering crises within several NIDO structures and appeals to all factions to close ranks, put their houses in order, and work together in unity in the overall interest of Nigerians in the Diaspora. The Commission further urges all Diaspora groups to refrain from dragging NIDO into political partisanship. NiDCOM further advises MDAs and Nigerian Missions abroad to seek proper clarification and guidance from the Commission before engaging with any individual or group that claims to represent the Diaspora as the Commission has a register of all duly registered diaspora groups and associations. The Commission remains open and committed to working with all duly constituted Diaspora organisations and well-meaning Nigerians in the Diaspora worldwide, in line with its mandate to harness the human capital and material resources of Nigerians abroad for the socio-economic development of Nigeria. Signed, Abdur-Rahman Balogun Director, Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit NiDCOM, Abuja.

PRESS RELEASE NIGERIANS IN CANADA COMMEND MINISTER, NIS, OVER PASSPORT INTERVENTION ABUJA, NIGERIA – SEPT. 27, 2026 Nigerians in Canada have commended the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, NiDCOM and the Nigeria Immigration Service for the successful completion of the NiDEC Passport Intervention Programme, which captured 2,233 applicants across five Canadian provinces. The intervention, held as part of the Nigeria Diaspora Economic Conference (NiDEC) in Toronto, ran from August 12 to September 4, 2026, taking passport services directly to Nigerian communities in Toronto, New Brunswick, Manitoba, Saskatoon and Calgary. The exercise was delivered through the collaboration of the Ministry of Interior, NiDCOM, the Nigerian High Commission, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Nigerian Canadian Association Council of Presidents (NCACP) and local Nigerian Canadian Associations. Beneficiaries expressed satisfaction with the turnaround time, with several reporting receipt of their passports within four to seven days of biometric capture. An applicant in Manitoba, who received her passport within a week of her biometric capture, appreciated all officials involved for their dedication, describing the process as evidence of a committed community structure. Another beneficiary reported receiving the passport within four days and described the exercise as well planned, organised and efficient. Stakeholders representing the Nigerian community said the intervention demonstrated the impact of responsive public service and strengthened the relationship between the Nigerian Government and Nigerians in the Diaspora. They particularly commended the Nigeria Immigration Service for deploying officers across the five locations and working under demanding schedules, including weekends, to ensure that applicants received the required services. The Nigerian Canadian Association Council of Presidents also recognised the roles of NiDCOM and the Nigeria Immigration Service in coordinating the exercise, noting that the partnership between government institutions and diaspora organisations enabled the multi-city intervention to be delivered as a coordinated national effort. Community leaders have consequently appealed to the Federal Government, through the Minister of Interior, to consider a second phase of the programme to accommodate Nigerians in Canada who could not benefit from the first phase. E- Signed. Abdur-Rahman Balogun (mnipr) Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, NIDCOM, Abuja.
