I changed my handle from nix_eth to @justinkalland today.
I've been sitting with this for a while.
nix.eth came to life in 2021 because I wanted a pseudonymous identity to freely explore web3 through. I was drawn to Nix as this small, distant moon of Pluto. I was excited by the promise of ENS, and it was one of the rare three letter names available. I was also living in Germany, where "nix" means "nothing" and that felt right.
I didn't expect for nix.eth to become my primary identity.
Through it, I focused my career on web3. My artistic side became public. Many of my closest friendships were made. It was supposed to be a throwaway part of me, but it became a core one.
Lately, it felt like I've outgrown it. I wanted to be Justin again. Like nix.eth is a finished chapter, even if it's part of my book.
I also feel differently about ENS now. What once felt optimistic, cool, maybe even a little punk, doesn't anymore. I believe ENS fumbled what should have been the shining example of how decentralized protocols can reshape the internet.
nix.eth will always be part of my provenance. Blockchains don't forget, and that name is stamped all over. My art collections like Treeangles are immutable, so I can't change the on-chain name, and I think that's positive.
Let's see where the journey it goes next.
