Bout time
The UIL approved a mandated 35-second shot clock for basketball starting in 2028-29 school year for 6A and 5A, with other classes to adopt it in following years. 6A and 5A schools would have the option to use it in the 2027-28 school year.

Legend ….
For Nicke Smith, building the next chapter at DeSoto goes beyond what happens on the court. It’s about making sure the athletes — and the entire school — have a platform to be seen.
“They want to be at any platform that can help promote not only the athletic program but the school. DeSoto is all for it, and I’m totally behind that.”
With the support of DeSoto behind him, Smith wants that visibility to extend across the Eagles’ programs and help create something bigger throughout the school. And when it comes to where he believes DeSoto basketball is headed, there’s no hesitation.
“We’re gonna run the state.”
And the legacy he hopes people associate with this new chapter five years from now?
“Legend.”

The location may be different, but Nicke Smith’s foundation for building a winning program isn’t changing.
As he begins his new chapter at DeSoto, Smith is bringing many of the same values that helped establish a championship culture at Kimball.
“You have to establish that as a coach. You have to have an identity for your team.”
At Kimball, that identity was simple: “We’re going to play hard, and we’re going to compete, and we’re going to give ourselves a chance to win games.”
Now Smith plans to establish that same standard at DeSoto.
“That’s what we’re going to do over here at DeSoto High School. In that program, we’re going to play hard, we’re going to compete, and we’re going to always give ourselves a chance to win.”
A new program. The same commitment to culture, competition, and winning.

Win the Day
After three state championships in four years, including back-to-back titles at Kimball, Nicke Smith is embracing a new challenge as the head coach at DeSoto.
Smith saw a community and basketball program hungry to return to the top. “I saw a community and a program that wanted to get back at the elite level, and me being an elite coach, I wanted to go back over there and accept that challenge.”
And he isn’t shy about the expectations he has for what comes next: “I know that we’re going to be successful. I know that we’re going to get multiple state championships.”
With a community that believes in him and a proven championship pedigree behind him, Smith is ready to begin a new chapter and work toward bringing DeSoto basketball back to an elite level.

The recruiting landscape has changed, and DeSoto head coach Nicke Smith believes creating opportunities for high school players now takes more than ever.
With 430+ career wins, multiple state championships and relationships with college coaches across the country, Smith has spent years helping players reach the next level. But the rise of the Transfer Portal and college programs prioritizing older, experienced players has made that path increasingly difficult.
“Because of the portal, it’s kind of hard to make that call and just get a kid in school now, because they want to go older.”
For Smith, that means the village around a player has to grow with the changing landscape.
“Now it takes not just myself, but a platform like Revocruit and everybody, and parents and everyone, to just help that one kid maybe get that one opportunity to play at the next level.”
The relationships still matter. The high school coach still matters. But Smith sees platforms like Revocruit becoming another piece of that village, helping connect high school talent with college coaches already evaluating players across the recruiting landscape.
The game has changed. Creating opportunities has become a team effort.
