Look what I'm holding in my hands today. 😍😍😍
In NYC today, doing a session and they already have copies of the book! I can barely believe it.
@New_Old_Paul
Wow!
Feeling so grateful, beyond words.

“The job is not to choose between theory and practice, but to make sure that practice is shaped by theory and that theory is tested, enriched, and made usable through practice.”
@New_Old_Paul & @nsachdeva2019 explain why teaching is not a dichotomy between science and craft 🔗⬇️
New post in the 'Expert Tecaher' series.
Teaching is both science and craft.

Is Teaching a Science or a Craft?
Understanding that teaching is both science and craft provides us with a much better way of thinking about teaching than the old tired debates allow.

I'm not sure if it matters too much to be honest. I think given what we know from research and classroom practice it makes sense to:
1. When you are first teaching something, Block, then interleave gently with items that are similar/discrimantory. Signal that you are doing this to students.
2. Over time, do retrieval on entirely unrelated items as well as on related items
This is best of all worlds

📢NEW EPISODE
Does teaching for 20 years actually make you an expert?
Unfortunately, experience alone does not produce expertise. In this new episode I sit down with two absolute legends, @P_A_Kirschner and @nsachdeva2019, to unpack what it really takes to become an expert educator and how you can deliberately build that skill set over time.

* You also get to hear about the incredible origin story behind Paul's famous 2006 minimal guidance paper.
My 5.30am ET face. Love waking up early to discuss expert teaching with my amazing Australian collegaues. Thank you, Brendan!

It’s helpful to hear these kinds of discussions where nuance and precision on terms can be pressed within respectful challenge/argumentation.

This was a hell of a lot of fun. We agreed on a LOT, but also had good discussions about things like how to define expert teachers and whether teaching really is "uniquely complex"
