Haskell County in southeastern Oklahoma is named in honor of Charles N. Haskell, Oklahoma’s first governor and a member of the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention. The county had nearly 17,000 residents in 1907. The most recent US Census numbers recorded more than 11,500 people.

There are two new historical markers in Oklahoma! The first is in downtown Guthrie (Logan County), at the corner of 2nd Street and Oklahoma Avenue. It honors Kate Barnard. The second is north of Cache (Comanche County). It recognizes Craterville Park, established in 1923.

Today is the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month! This Mexican flag in our collection is from the 19th century. It belonged to a couple who moved from Texas to present-day Oklahoma in 1878. The date on the flag is September 16, 1810, which is Mexican Independence Day.
