Happy to share I’ll be speaking at QCon in San Francisco this November about the work I’ve been doing at Forter. QCon is a wonderful conference and I’m really looking forward to it :)
Omer van Kloeten, Principal Engineer at Forter, says reviewing code you didn't write is harder than writing it yourself, and AI just made that the default mode of engineering. Full session details: buff.ly/m0RXr2V

Happy 10th anniversary to Titanfall 2! Thankful for the community keeping its spirit alive in projects like the new VR game and the Cyberpunk mod. It’s a shame we’ll never get to see a Titanfall 3. “Standby for Titanfall” nitter.cf/i/trending/21152686429…

messaging my wife a link containing proof of her husband cheating on her from an anonymous instagram account and then when she clicks on it texting her to let her know she failed the family phishing test and she has to retake my cybersecurity course

(btw Forter has offices with doors that close)
The background noise in open offices, in multiple experiments, decreases the ability to do analytical work, increase bugs in software, and decrease the ability to find bugs. Open floor plans are just a bad idea for any solo work.

Interesting idea. Had tokens to burn so I got Opus to put it to the test
Of course it can. Take all 100,000+ games on steam, scrape their descriptions and metadata, semantically plot them in vector space using embeddings, mathematically choose a location in vector space far away from neighbors, convert that back to a description and metadata, boom, brand new ideas ranked by how unlike any other ideas they are.

The purpose of estimating software projects is not business planning its to create a self imposed deadline that creates social pressure for teams to finish the project. This sounds insane. When I was an engineer I hated estimation and deadlines. My feeling was, it will be done when it’s done and we don’t know when it will be done. I would obnoxiously give a probability distribution whenever asked if we would ship on time. But in reality, in a complex project with many people or teams, people need a good deadline, one that is aggressive but not insane. This is what lets everyone involved solve for what really matters, cut things that don’t matter, and push to complete something really hard. It’s a silly social convention, but it really helps. In fact setting aggressive but not insane deadlines, slipping them when needed but holding them when possible, is one of the key capabilities in engineering management.
There’s a kind of polite fiction at the heart of the software industry.

I miss writing code, too. I don’t miss learning a technically noble goal requires so many people writing so much code that it doesn’t make economic sense and then having to give that goal up entirely.
I miss writing code manually. There was a lot of joy in learning a new programming language, learn the APIs of a new database, go through the journey of coming up with a cool idea and seeing it work after a couple of days/weeks of hacking.

16 years ago, we went to the @GhibliML and happened across someone, meticulously painting a mural. We stopped to watch him for a while. Unfortunately, at the time, no one spoke enough English to explain to us what was happening.

This week, we came back and found that same mural, now complete. The staff were surprised to hear our story and shared the person we saw was none other than Yoshida Noboru, one of the studio’s veteran art directors, who worked on Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl, Ponyo, and more.
