My mother gave my younger brother the house I spent 8 years paying for. I found out at her birthday dinner, when he stood up, raised his glass, and thanked her for giving him a place to raise his future children. Everyone clapped. I just stared at her. Because there was one thing my brother didn't know about that house. And neither did my mother. When I was 24, my father died, leaving my mother with debts she couldn't manage. I was the one who stepped in. I worked two jobs, sent money home, and eventually bought a small house for her. I put the deed in my name, but told her she could live there for as long as she wanted. My brother, Daniel, was still in school then. I paid his fees, bought his first laptop, and helped him get his first job. I never expected a medal for any of it. But when Daniel got married, my mother decided he needed the house more than I did. "You have a good job," she told me privately. "You can always buy another one. Your brother needs somewhere to start his family." I reminded her that I'd bought the house for her. She looked at me as if I'd insulted her. "So everything you've done for this family was a business transaction?" I couldn't believe she'd said that. I swallowed my anger and left the conversation alone. Then, at her birthday dinner, Daniel announced the house transfer like it was a done deal. I waited until everyone finished celebrating. Then I asked him one question. "Did Mum tell you who actually owns that house?" His smile disappeared. My mother dropped her fork. And for the first time that evening, nobody at the table said a word.
