"Optimizing for engagement" is tech-industry shorthand for increasing the time people spend scrolling, swiping or chatting with bots. It's bad enough with old-school social media, but harms are compounded with AI-powered friends, girlfriends, and therapists.
“It’s just exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology,” says one AI researcher.

With corporations around the country rolling over to comply with Trump's anti-DEI crusade, it's refreshing to see a major company buck the trend. @Apple, you're not perfect, but you did the right thing here 👏

Meta's "MAGA Makeover" may not look so attractive to advertisers.
The company is deliberately targeting the LGBTQ community through weaponized language, and employees as well as brands are rightly not OK with that.
"While some of Meta’s advertisers may look the other way and ignore such blatant targeting of the LGBTQ community, I feel confident that many (hopefully most) will not."

New SEC guidelines imposed at the height of proxy season create a serious roadblock for investor advocates.
@ICCROnline, the Shareholder Rights Group, and @AsYouSow sent a letter to the SEC requesting that they withdraw the changes, at least until after the 2025 proxy season. 🧵
The changes would create a number of challenges:
🔸 Limit ability of shareholders to raise issues of long-term risk for companies
🔸 Unfairly restrict investors' ability to engage with companies
🔸 Further insulate boards and management from different perspectives 🧵

Yet Big Tech is playing a major role in Israel's recent wars, with AI involved in everything from translation to targeting. loom.ly/H2shoVA
There are so many ways that AI and other emerging tech affects workers – especially low-wage workers. Investors need to know the risks their companies are creating, and taking on, by continuing to push harmful tech tools.

Even after calling EU rule "censorship" in January, Meta still pledged to do its part to fight disinformation on its platforms. So did over 40 other tech companies, with the notable exception of X.
