First reviews of DLSS/FG Preset C! @AncientGameplay first, showing the new model is faster but that comes with noticeable image quality tradeoffs; notably, Preset C is dumber with fine text. That label in the center of this frame is VERY distracting in the moving image. 🧵

I watched You Can See Everything. I don't recall ever going to the theater for a documentary. I'd do it for a very few, like Crumb (didn't catch in the big screen). I was like, oh we can wait for streaming. Son convinced me. This was extraordinary cinema, 10/10 just trust me.

Darmok is the perfect ST episode. Aliens with sequined pajamas, weird foreheads (and uniquely, weird thumbs), planet that looks like socal, the worst cgi alien of all time, plastic knives, ship battle that’s just lasers & shaky screen, and it’s the greatest sci fi story ever done
one of the best to ever do it, from "Darmok":

This stuff makes me think of a major prediction of Golden Age Sci-Fi that, I used to believe for decades, hadn't aged well: That in the future, computing power would be monopolized by the owners of giant monolithic computers (usually the government, sometimes big corporations).🧵

It wasn't just Asimov. Arthur Clarke had his Central Computer, Mark V, and of course the HAL series. THHGTTG from 1978 has its Deep Thought. Even Libertarian icon Robert Heinlein had his own big mainframe, HOLMES IV. Nobody predicted highly decentralized, personal computing.

And we're now full circle in the story, our personal devices will be thin dumb terminals but all real computing power will belong to three or four companies renting time from mysterious, all-powerful electronic brains, each the size of a city. 🔚

Whoa. I called this one, Adrenalin 26.10.1 was a massive update but it had a few gremlins–many confessed by a long list of Known Issues–and it needed a quick hotfix. Looks like AMD delivered it, Adrenalin 26.10.2 now with a long list of fixes. I experienced the overlay issues.

Replying to @HardwareUnboxed
@HardwareUnboxed review of the updated FSR4/FG frame pacing is *fantastic*. As usual, I'm adding some extra insight over Tim's detective work! Starting with the good, Tim confirms display-change pacing is now fixed for good, it's excellent. Main limitation: that's RDNA4+ only.

As for older GPUs, AMD is now in the same boat of NVidia whose MFG only runs on Blackwell for the same reason: Flip Metering HW. Except DLSS/FG's pacing is good enough for 2X and still better than FSR/FG on Ada, so I urge AMD to further improve the non-accelerated Swapchain. 🔚

Small clarification: I meant above that DLSS/FG frame pacing on Ada HW is better than what FSR/FG used to be before this update, i.e. comparing both FG systems *without* acceleration by Flip Meter/Queue HW, DLSS wins. But both accelerated, it's now a tie (according to HUB).

A sad week for Star Trek fans. Patrick was the star, but each of these actors and their characters represented important aspects of ST. Chekov was of course part of Trek's progressivism: a Russian crew member in the height of the Cold War and red scare in the US. 🧵

TNG created so much of the canon! TOS lore was basic, it was mostly a short low-budget cowboys in space show. TAS added a lot but ~nobody watched that. 168 TNG episodes defined so much of what we know as Star Trek now. All later shows are a continuity or counterpoint to TNG.

Every other Captain lives in the shadow of Picard because he best represented Roddenberry's & Federation's values. Brooks/Sisko & DS9 = amazing but if I had a time machine I'm not even visiting a military outpost. I'm boarding either Kirk's or Picard's Enterprise, to boldly go.🔚
