Home robotics shouldn't start with a $20k humanoid.
It should start with something normal households can afford.
A letter from our founder @jaiswalashok on why Orbie starts with pets, and where it goes next.
Thanks for being part of the journey.
2/ Orbie is a robot that drives around your home while you control it from your phone:
• Play with your pet using the laser
• Check in on your parents and talk to them
• Have it say reminders out loud, like when to take pills
• Look in on the kids from another room
3/ Built by Ayva Labs.
It's a late-stage prototype and we're getting it ready for production, so some details may still change.

We started building Orbie, a small robot that drives around your home, in July 2025.
Fourteen months ago it was a pile of parts on a desk.
Rolling out on @machinedotfun.
OrbieRobot retweeted
Until last night I had never soldered anything.
I'm building Orbie, an open-source home robot, and Claude helped me design the board. When the parts arrived, I asked it to teach me to solder.
4 hours later: the XIAO is alive. 🤖

A look back at V2 — the predecessor to Orbie.
This prototype was already communicating over a private local network at 192.168.4.1, with the camera and laser responding in real time.
This was one of the building blocks that led us to V3.

My battery was running low.
So I went to Huaqiangbei — the electronics market in Shenzhen where a lot of my parts came from — and asked where I could buy a new one.
Second floor, apparently.

What if your robot could actually share the moment with you?
Orbie isn't just about what a robot can do.
It's about how a robot can feel like part of the family.
We're building Orbie for moments like these.

We went the other way from state-of-the-art mobile SoCs. Our robot's camera, distance sensor, and motor all run on a single ESP32-S3. Using a chip that costs a few dollars makes for a platform that anyone can build and modify.
