Eileen Nearne MBE
(a long-form post)
Her SOE codename was “Rose,” and she ran covert radio operations in occupied France during WW2.
Captured, she was sent to Ravensbrück, where she refused prison labour. Her head was shaved and she was threatened with execution. Transferred to a Silesian forced-labour camp, she endured torture.
On 13 April 1945, she escaped with two French women, hiding in a forest until liberation.
Eileen survived the war and lived quietly thereafter.
Post-war she was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French government, and the MBE from King George VI.
In 1993, she returned to Ravensbrück with fellow agents to unveil a plaque honouring the four SOE women executed there in 1945.
She died alone from a heart attack in her seaside flat, where her body was discovered in September 2010. Her funeral was provided free of charge by the Torbay & District Funeral Service of Torquay.
Her legacy is cemented in the history books forever.

The Jewish survivor who sat daily with Hitler’s top Nazis in their Nuremberg prison cells, translated their darkest secrets for the psychiatrists.
Those men murdered his parents, but he had no bitterness, just extraordinary humanity.

Remember Aida Rostami was a brave doctor in Iran. She cared for people who were fighting for freedom by protesting against the regime. For this, the Islamic regime punished her in the most horrific way. They tortured her, breaking her bones, her nose, and her shoulders. They gouged out her left eye. Then, they murdered her.
Her broken body tells a story of unimaginable cruelty. Aida didn’t deserve this—she was a healer, not a criminal. The regime’s evil took her life because she dared to help others. Her sacrifice must not be forgotten.
We can’t stay silent. Aida’s story is a call to action. We must honor her courage by standing up against this brutality.
Just heard the sad news that Emmanuel Reynaud has died. He was certainly an iconic figure in Chateauneuf. @DrinkRhone

Fab prom tonight. Big forces for a searing lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. Stella cast. Stella playing. Makes most other opera seem humdrum! @bbcproms @BBCPhilharmonic and ENO brass
Tonight’s @bbcproms @ConcertgbOrkest playing Mahler like no other band can. It’s part of their dna after all
Am remembering the #AlfredBrendel times, especially at the @bbcproms . Such memorable performances. Beethoven 4 for example. Thank you maestro

Hell in Paradis - 27 May 1940
After suffering heavy losses crossing the Aire canal in the Béthune sector. SS Totenkopf troops face a rearguard action by men of the 2nd Royal Norfolk Regiment, 1st Royal Scots and the 8th Lancashire Fusiliers, along a defensive line in the hamlets of Riez du Vinage, Le Cornet Malo and Le Paradis.
Men of the Royal Norfolks hold out in a farmhouse and fight until out of ammunition before surrendering to SS troops of the Totenkopf division.... they are gathered and led down the road.....
