What a terrific mockumentary! An absurdist, satirical take on humanity's struggle to remain relevant in the age of AI. The retired uncles' fight is, in many ways, everyone's fight, driven by the growing anxiety of becoming obsolete at home, in society, and in the workplace.
Pranav Bhasin and his entire team (writing, editing, sound, production) pack so much into just eleven minutes, blending the real with the ridiculous. The film taps into a collective anxiety and turns it into an unlikely act of protest. Their use of misinformation as a weapon is comical on the one hand, yet strangely reasonable in the context of their struggle. However irrational their methods may seem, the underlying concern is unmistakable, and the point comes through beautifully.
At its heart, it is more about staying relevant as human beings than about fighting AI.

Apart from that he will be remembered for the stylish actions sequences, 10 mins stories on big screen and ofc those green-yellow filters, quite an upgrade in Hindi Cinema of those days.
Sadly the departure was untimely as he had still so much more to offer. #RestinMemories

Basudev Chakraborty (Basu-Manohari) spinning his magic in this beautiful melody penned by evergreen #Majrooh saab. Picking #JagjitSingh to sing this was a master stroke , which was the idea of the producer-director Khalid Mohammed (not the Fiza/Zubeida one)
I still remember it was winters of 92-93, when the cassette of Nargis was released. And it came along with the music of highly anticipated, would be blockbuster, big commercial venture of Roop Ki Raani Choron Ka Raja. Yet #Nargis was played on loop as RKRCKR music itself turned out to be a disappointing one.
I still remember one of my favourite music reviewers those days had written the music reviews of both the films together and he had commented
"रूप की रानी चोरों का राजा का संगीत सुनने के बाद जब नरगिस का संगीत सुनते हैं तो ऐसा लगता है कि एक शोर भरे खटारे के कारखाने से निकलकर किसी खुशबू से भरे फूलों के बाग में आ गए हैं"
The soundtrack of Nargis was a bouquet of some melodious songs by Lata Ji and Jagjit Singh, and still remains a favourite listen once in a while..

आज PYRE सिनेमाघरों में रिलीज़ हो रही है।
आज का दिन मेरे लिए सिर्फ़ एक फ़िल्म की रिलीज़ नहीं, बल्कि लगभग आठ साल के सफ़र का पड़ाव है। उम्मीदें, सपने, संघर्ष और निराशाएँ। कई बार लगा कि PYRE के रूप में मैंने अपनी ही चिता बना ली है।
जून 2018 में मुनस्यारी में मेरी मुलाक़ात 84 साल के केसर सिंह जी और उनकी पत्नी से हुई थी। उनकी ज़िंदगी, अकेलापन और बेटे का इंतज़ार मुझे भीतर तक छू गया। उसी मुलाक़ात से PYRE की कहानी का जन्म हुआ।
मैंने तय किया कि इस कहानी को दुनिया के सामने लाना है। लेकिन कई स्टूडियो और ओटीटी प्लेटफ़ॉर्म ने यह कहकर मना कर दिया कि गाँव के लोगों, गैर-पेशेवर कलाकारों और एक बुज़ुर्ग दंपती की कहानी वाली फ़िल्म का आज कोई भविष्य नहीं है।
एक निर्माता तैयार हुए और शूटिंग शुरू हुई। लेकिन फ़िल्म पूरी होने से पहले ही उन्होंने हाथ खींच लिया और अपने पैसे वापस माँगे। मेरे सामने बड़ा संकट था।आख़िरकार मैंने अपनी सारी बचत, म्यूचुअल फ़ंड, ज़मीन और यहाँ तक कि कार भी बेच दी। किसी तरह निर्माता के पैसे लौटाए और फ़िल्म पूरी की।इस मुश्किल दौर में एक इंसान ने लगातार मेरा साथ दिया। नाम यहाँ नहीं लिख रहा, लेकिन जीवन भर उसका आभारी रहूँगा।
फ़िल्म पूरी हुई तो नई लड़ाई शुरू हुई-इसे फ़िल्म फ़ेस्टिवल्स तक पहुँचाने की। एक सेल्स एजेंट ने दुनिया भर के फ़ेस्टिवल्स में फ़िल्म पहुँचाने का भरोसा दिया, लेकिन कुछ महीनों बाद उन्होंने भी हाथ खड़े कर दिए। अब पूरी ज़िम्मेदारी मेरे और अरिंद्र राय चौधरी के कंधों पर थी। अरिंद्र ने पहली बार इस फ़िल्म पर भरोसा जताया था, तब वह सिर्फ़ 25 साल का था।
फिर ख़बर आई कि फ़िल्म का चयन दुनिया के प्रतिष्ठित 28th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival में हो गया है। यह फ़िल्म का वर्ल्ड प्रीमियर था। वहाँ इसे Best Film – Audience Award भी मिला।
इसके बाद PYRE दुनिया के लगभग 28 अंतरराष्ट्रीय फ़िल्म फ़ेस्टिवल्स में पहुँची और 18 अंतरराष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार जीते, जिनमें 15 Best Film Awards शामिल हैं।
लेकिन इतने सम्मान के बावजूद भारत का कोई स्टूडियो या ओटीटी प्लेटफ़ॉर्म इस फ़िल्म को हाथ लगाने या रिलीज़ करने को तैयार नहीं था। दुनिया भर में प्यार मिला, लेकिन अपने ही देश में रिलीज़ का रास्ता नहीं मिल रहा था।
मैं हैरान और दुखी था। बार-बार सवाल उठता था कि जिस फ़िल्म को ऑस्कर विजेता संगीतकार माइकल डाना (MYCHAEL DANNA) का संगीत हो, जिसके लिए गुलज़ार साहब ने बिना किसी आर्थिक लेन-देन की बात किए गीत लिखा हो, जिसकी एडिटिंग में ऑस्कर विजेता जर्मन एडिटर पेट्रीशिया रोमल (PATRICIA ROMMEL) ने बिना पारिश्रमिक सहयोग किया हो और जिसे दुनिया भर में इतने पुरस्कार मिले हों, उसे भारत के स्टूडियो और ओटीटी प्लेटफ़ॉर्म क्यों नहीं अपना रहे हैं? आख़िर इस फ़िल्म में ऐसी क्या कमी है?
मेरे लिए PYRE धीरे-धीरे बुझती हुई चिता बनती जा रही थी। मुझे PYRE में अपनी चिता दिख रही थी।एक समय लगा कि शायद यह फ़िल्म कभी भारतीय दर्शकों तक नहीं पहुँचेगी। मैं भीतर से टूट चुका था। मानसिक, व्यक्तिगत और आर्थिक रूप से बहुत कुछ खो चुका था। कुछ नुक़सान ऐसे भी थे जिन्हें शब्दों में बयान करना मुश्किल है।
लेकिन अरिंद्र ने हार नहीं मानी। उन्हीं की कोशिशों से लंदन में रहने वाले सुरेश जोशी तक फ़िल्म पहुँची। सुरेश जी फ़िल्म देखी और कहा, जिसे मैं कभी नहीं भूल सकता-
“अगर मैंने इतनी सुंदर और ईमानदार फ़िल्म को सपोर्ट नहीं किया तो फिर जीवन का कोई अर्थ नहीं है।”
और आज PYRE आपके सामने है।
आज यह फ़िल्म सिनेमाघरों तक पहुँची है तो इसका सबसे बड़ा श्रेय अरिंद्र और सुरेश जोशी को जाता है। दोनों का दिल से आभार। कुछ लोग आपके डूबते विश्वास को फिर से ज़िंदा कर देते हैं।
आज आप सबसे बस एक गुज़ारिश है।
कृपया PYRE देखने जाइए। अपने माता-पिता, परिवार और दोस्तों के साथ। यह एक बुज़ुर्ग दंपती के प्रेम, अकेलेपन, उम्र और बेटे के लौटने के इंतज़ार की कहानी है। हमारा theatrical release बहुत सीमित है, देश भर में करीब 80 screens पर।
यह फ़िल्म किसी बड़े बजट, बड़े सितारे या बड़े प्रचार के सहारे नहीं बनी। यह हिमालय के उन दो लोगों की कहानी है, जिन्होंने पहली बार कैमरे के सामने अभिनय किया और अपनी ज़िंदगी से इसे सच बना दिया।
आपका प्यार और साथ ही इस छोटी-सी फ़िल्म की सबसे बड़ी ताक़त होगा।
फ़िल्म अच्छी लगे तो दोस्तों को बताइए और सोशल मीडिया पर साझा कीजिए। छोटी फ़िल्मों को दर्शकों तक पहुँचाने में आपकी भूमिका बहुत बड़ी हो सकती है।

गीत और संगीत की दुनिया की दो महान हस्तियों को PYRE के लिए एक मंच पर लाना मेरे लिए किसी सपने के सच होने से कम नहीं था।
हमारे समय के सर्वश्रेष्ठ गीतकारों और फिल्मकारों में से एक, गुलज़ार साहब, और Life of Pi जैसी महान फिल्म के लिए ऑस्कर जीत चुके माइकल डैना को इस गीत के लिए साथ लाना और उनकी प्रतिभाओं को एक साथ आते देखना मेरे लिए बेहद सुखद अनुभव था।
दिलचस्प बात यह है कि इस गीत की रचना के दौरान दोनों कभी आमने-सामने नहीं मिले। गीत को लेकर उनकी बातचीत ज़ूम वीडियो कॉल के ज़रिए होती थी।लेकिन इस गीत से जुड़ा एक वाकया है, जिसे मैं जीवन भर नहीं भूल सकता।जब गुलज़ार साहब ने पहली बार PYRE देखी, तो उनके मुँह से निकले पहले शब्द थे:
“इतनी खूबसूरत फ़िल्म के लिए अगर मैं गीत नहीं लिखूँगा, तो फिर किसके लिए लिखूँगा?”
और जब उन्होंने गीत लिख दिया, तो किसी भी तरह के पारिश्रमिक की बात नहीं हुई थी। मैंने उनके मैनेजर को फ़ोन करके पूछा कि सर से इस बारे में बात नहीं हुई? हमें आगे क्या करना है?
मुश्किल से दो-तीन मिनट बाद ही गुलज़ार साहब का फ़ोन आ गया।
उन्होंने कहा, “तूने इतनी अच्छी फ़िल्म बनाई है, विनोद। इस गीत के लिए तुमसे पैसे लूँगा मैं?”
उनके ये शब्द मुझे भीतर तक द्रवित कर गए। मैं जीवन भर नहीं भूल सकता कि उन्होंने PYRE को किस तरह अपना प्यार, स्नेह और आशीर्वाद दिया।
गुलज़ार साहब, आपका यह स्नेह मेरे लिए किसी भी पुरस्कार से कम नहीं है।
