Paying tax isn't a burden, it's a privilege. "it is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion." Adam Smith, The Wealth of Nations 1776

Lots of recent comments about gas prices being back to normal so why is electricity still expensive Truth is gas prices were still over 200% higher than 2016 or 2019, and today they're over 400% higher Gas price amounts to about 45% of your elec bill, volatility has a big cost

Externalities are quantifiable, you can challenge the economics but you can't ignore them. Even ignoring carbon, you'd still migrate from gas long term (volatility, energy security, etc) That's evidenced by the £300billion cost of the 2022 gas crisis (2x renewable subsidies)

Externalities are costs not reflected in the market price. For alcohol and tobacco that's health costs For gas that's carbon, health, price volatility You can challenge the numbers but you can't just ignore the economics

Estimate £200 to £300 billion UK cost of 22/23 energy crisis. Direct costs £150b £68 billion increased household energy spending £78 billion government support to homes and business Indirect costs £50b - 150b Inflationary impacts on food, steel transport, steel, energy, etc

OBR £52billion covers govt support ECIU £90billion additional gas costs. Different assessment but £142billion in direct energy costs Food inflation 37% since 2020, about 25% due to energy crisis. That's £50billion a year (food, eating out, etc). £150 billion indirect costs

Oops! The Times has had to issue an embarrassing correction over supposedly "sluggish" EV sales 😳 ❌ It said EV sales to private buyers fell 10.8% this yr ✅They actually GREW…by 62% Yet Times articles still claim a "big fall", "collapse" & "slide" in private EV sales 🤔 1/7

Most honest billionaire quote ever: "I mean, it would be great to say I'm just this absolutely f***ing wonderful person, and that I earned all of this, and that this expresses my awesomeness, but there was an awful lot of luck that went into it." Gabe Newell, Valve Corporation

gbnews.com/politics/nigel-fa… Ooopsss… Mr.@Nigel_Farage himself has just challenged me on the facts! What an honor — for a “giant man,” as he described me (meaning, of course, from a “tiny country”) — to earn the attention of Britain’s unrivaled virtuoso of headline politics. He said — and I quote: “I tell you what, Mr. Rama, did you know one in 50 Albanians in Britain are in prison? So show some goodwill and take them all back tomorrow, because this is hypocrisy.” Well, Mr. Farage — let me return the challenge with something unusually boring in your line of work: actual numbers. That “one in 50 Albanians are in prison” claim? It’s not a fact. It’s bonkers. A classic from the post-truth Brexit playbook: “If it sounds scary, it must be true.” Guess what? When the numbers are actually run — surprise! — even if we assumed every Albanian currently in prison is guilty (and in fact, many are caught up in an outdated and restrictive visa system), the rate of criminality among Albanians in the UK would be no higher than — and likely lower than — that of the British population itself. Now, since we both seem to cherish “goodwill” and are clearly allergic to “hypocrisy,” here’s my offer: Let’s both bring our numbers to the table. If your “one in 50” claim holds water — I will personally commit to taking them all back. That’s not a competing headline — it’s a public pledge. But if your scary stat turns out to be just tabloid fuel, then no apology needed. No drama. Instead, you’ll come to Albania — as my guest of honor. You’ll get real sun, real hospitality, and even more real facts — about Albania and its fabulous people. And all I ask in return is the simplest public pledge from you, made while enjoying our country: next time someone badmouths Albanians, you’ll be the first to tell them — in your histrionic way — not to do it again. So what do you say? One fact-check for a full deportation — or a full vacation, with some of the warmest people you’ll ever meet. Come on, Nigel. If you lose on a fact check, you’ll still win a whole nation of friends for life. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Replying to @BBCr4today
@BBCr4today genuine question for @DaleVince if you're so convinced by tidal energy then why doesn't @ecotricity invest in building tidal generation? My understanding is that the financial viability is unproven (unlike nuclear eg EDF and French energy market)

PS as far as modular nuclear reactors being unproven, every nuclear submarine uses one so technically it's proven but possibly not financially

It's starting to look like @elonmusk actions, including acquiring Twitter, are part of a carefully orchestrated plan to implement @peterthiel vision for the future. We should be talking about whether that's a good thing for the majority, rather than just for sovereign individuals

If a 20 minute event starts an hour late, what does that tell you about the 2027 launch date for #cybercab? And why is it a 2 seater coupe with scissor doors, form over function?
