Publication day! Güney Işıkara's and my book "Marx's Theory of Value at the Frontiers" is out oday! We wrote a book on Marx's theory of value. Why? Because it is essential for tackling core 21st-century crises: imperialism and ecological breakdown. 🔗 routledge.com/Marxs-Theory-o…

Staying on the issue of crises, in 1978 Anwar Shaikh published a comment on Dobb's theory of crisis paper, in the Cambridge Journal of Economics he had co-founded. Maybe most importantly, he formulates fundamentals of real competition as driving falling rates of profits.

In our recent book, S. Savran and I modeled our crisis chapter, "The World in Economic Crisis: The Twilight of Capitalism," on Anwar’s article that you shared. tinyurl.com/4jz8r7jw

One can distinguish phases in Anwar Shaikh's work, but some issues appear from his first to the last contributions. One is crisis and crisis theories, on which he wrote a primer in 1978. It is still key to understanding to different understandings of crisis between economists.

Many early contributions of Anwar Shaikh revive and further develop basic Marxist categories. In this paper from 1977, Anwar characterizes the "transformation problem" (from labor values to production prices), provides a modern solution, and gives the deviations economic meaning.

In April 1973, Challenge published a primer on international money market by Anwar Shaikh. It was his first publication post-dissertation, but more importantly, demonstrates his dedication to making economic analysis available to the broader public.

The money system Anwar describes has changed substantially. What remains is his sharp analysis and writing style. Also, what I mean by "broader" public: Most of Anwars writing wasn't popular, but it always made knowledge approachable to groups that had previously been gatekept.

Having arrived at the #30fmm conference and it's discussions about 30 years of heyeroeox and postkeynesian thought, I read Anwar Shaikh's short paper on heterodoxy as a true alternative from 2014 again. Here he counterposes criticism of the mainstream to independent alternatives.

At #30fmm in Berlin, Maximilian Krimmer of @unidue investigates the competitive behaviour of German firms post-1990, with results suggesting empirical support for Anwar Shaikh's real competition hypothesis.

It would have been Anwar Shaikh's 81st birthday today. On this occasion, I am sharing his 1973 dissertation, which put him on the map in a way his passing cannot reverse. He discusses issues that remain prominent throughout his career - Marx, competition, empirics, and more.

Yesterday, a well attended book launch of "The Wage Standard" (coorganized by Arbeiterkammer and INEQ) concluded @arindube's visit to Vienna. Thanks for coming, presenting, sharing and the many conversations!
