ALT At right, a tablet displays the cover of the POTI Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and International Peace and Security course. At left, the following quotes from the course are highlighted. Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is rooted in gender inequality and refers to violence perpetrated against someone against their will because of their gender. Effective survivor-centred approaches to SGBV require sensitivity to the ways that overlapping identities impact an individual's vulnerability to SGBV and a recognition that violence serves as both a driver and consequence of identity-based inequalities. Peace operations personnel need to be able to recognize different types of victims and to refer victims to appropriate service providers. Critically, these skills need to be built among all peacekeepers — not only women.
