Looking back at my career, I think about some of the great coaches I played for. A lot of the best were demanding without being threatening. They coached me hard without degrading me.
You can coach someone hard while still speaking life into them.
There’s no perfect coach. I know I’m not one. I coach my players hard and hold them to a standard, but I also make a point to let them know I believe in them and care about who they’re becoming.
You can hold players accountable and still build their confidence. You can demand more from them while making sure they know you’re in their corner.
Maybe you’re a coach who already has all this figured out, but I felt like some coaches needed to hear this today.
Coach them hard. Hold the standard. Speak life into them. That stuff matters more than we sometimes realize.
