Relatedly, a lot of ideas in the history of theology and philosophy and human thought began when one guy came up with a limited-purpose argument for one specific case at the time, that later metastisized into something that got centered while not being as applicable or as true at scale.

The “story as old as time” is that “stories as old as time” keep getting validated.

"...I learned Greek to read the New Testament in the original. Big mistake. [...] The more I read the text in Greek and the more I learned about the textual tradition, the less I believed that the Bible was the word of God." Our definition of "church trauma" should include the malpractice being led to believe the Bible was given to us as a complete whole like the Ten Commandments or the Book of Mormon, because that's unsustainable.

Actually a really interesting piece. "the Church? If it really is a divine institution, then it leaves much to be desired. But if it is simply a body of flawed human beings trying to bring about what they perceive as the resplendent kingdom of God among men, then what institution can boast of enabling such human flourishing over such a long period of time? And Jesus? Well, if he’s not the Son of God, he should be." compactmag.com/article/the-a…

3. Within heterosexual couples, when the man is less committed than the woman, they are no more likely to break up than when both are equally committed. But when the woman is less committed than the man, they are much more likely to split.

“yet… survey of 2,620 Protestant pastors, 52 percent are satisfied with the state of discipleship and spiritual formation in their churches.” Below paragraph is about their congregants.
A new survey indicates Christians have succumbed to the general literacy crisis of the culture. The ‘people of the Book’ don’t read it. @JenniferWilkin says this indicates one big thing: the church's failure of dscipleship—a failure we must urgently address! thegospelcoalition.org/artic…

It’s very difficult for Modernists to be Christians, and a lot of contemporary Christianity in the West is unconsciously (?) Modernist.

"The elder realized that this other man was in fact a demon whose sole purpose was to keep the monk enslaved to meaningless work."
We live complicated lives in a painfully complex world. Then, into our frenzied madness comes the kind, gentle invitation of Jesus: “Come to me all you who are weary… find rest for your souls.” ivpress.com/simplicity @ivpress

I think some churches are so large that the congregants themselves (1) never have to think about the national denomination in the way a church with just 50 people has to and (2) often aren’t committed to and knowledgeable about the denomination or tradition because they moved to the city and were looking for a new church, and decided on a Methodist one despite having gone to a Baptist one after growing up Presbyterian. To many, the national denomination is an abstraction and you’re in your own little world, and within that world everything seems fine.

PCUSA survivor here. I think there’s something wrong about an individual church leaving a denomination, and about an individual leaving a church, hurriedly and too quickly. But I don’t understand how a Methodist church decides *only in 2026* that it wants to leave the UMC. umnews.org/en/news/highland-…

Hey chat, is the 5 day work week… “Biblical”? .
The 40 hour workweek was literally given to workers.

My nephew is in a Protestant family but attends a Roman Catholic elementary school. Each year the school has a Halloween event, and since All Saints Day is the very next day, they’re encouraged to do catholic saint costumes. For some reason my sister has stopped asking me for suggestions, but I give them anyway to remind me of how sense of humor even among biological siblings can have disparate outcomes.

Two thoughts: * “Bible only” and denial of authoritative church tradition allow for this. * By the time something like this happens at a church it surprises only outsiders.
Moment an American pastor and prophetess, who are both married, introduce a new wife to their congregation and announce that they are now in a polygynous marriage with a female church member, claiming it is the “will of God.” 😭🤦🏾‍♂️🙆🏾‍♂️
