so what is stopping democrats reaching a legacy-defining immigration and border-protection deal with trump before the 2028 presidential? they now have great leverage and trump can sell it as defining his legacy as finishing what he started.
i've been telling you that a silent plurality of people want a return to early modern liberal democratic pragmatism, but the nerds and sharps are still too caught up on ideology and their preferred assumption that history fulfills ideas, not that than ideas can shape history.
it is funny when people who take pride in their cognitive independence cede control of their attention to others
memory, not compute, is the current bottleneck for ‘intelligence.’ partly because it’s a difficult physical and technical problem. partly because the major legacy manufacturers have little incentive to capex to increase production/supply of current products.
someone will crack the bottleneck, which is part of why no one is going to fund plant to increase production of existing products for a handful of years until those products become obsolete and why the manufacturers are taking every ounce of their pound of flesh now.

The transmogrification of what used to be liberal universalist humanism into illiberal new leftist particularist humanism, where only some humans merit empathy and the grace of the condition, and the rise of hegemonic activism, has destroyed traditionally humanist institutions.
'You Can See Everything' just confirmed my more general view that liberal democratic society is in the nature of a game-theoretic solution to the persistent problem of human sociopolitical organization which can be gamed by certain personality organizations if not duly enforced.
In retrospect, incumbents serious about public policy 15 years ago should have run on a ‘bitter medicine’ campaign, lost to either leftists or populists, and then swooped back in to power after the new govt’s big ideas catalyzed a poorly managed readjustment within in one term.

I think it is more that you simply cannot kick the fiscal can down the road any longer. But winning elections for the last two plus decades in any country has required you to run on kicking the can down the road longer. It would have been better to lose an election 15 years ago.
contemporary political nihilism doesn't reflect any great commitment to philosophical or moral seriousness. it seems mostly to be a kind of infantile tantrum in response to realizing that the long arc of human history does not in fact bend on its own towards a labor-less utopia.
My problem with 'centrism' as a label is that it reduces a position that might be called 'early modernist liberal pragmatism' to a scale and continuum chosen by other, plainly less serious people. This is also entirely consistent with Lyotard, btw, if we're being continental.

when the left murders people it's bad
but when the right murders people it's also bad

after half a lifetime's reflection i've come to the conclusion that the republic is more moliere and paul's epistle to the romans shakespeare
