In the context of recent announcement by Baba Ramdev about a massive initiative to examine Hindu texts for supposed interpolations and perhaps a subsequent attempt to purge the texts of these interpolations, I present to you Appendix II chapter from my book 'Chatuh Shloki Manusmriti: An English Commentary' which shows precisely why such revisionistic approaches to our Shastras are speculative, forced, prejudiced, and often without any objective foundation. Interested should check out the book- amazon.in/Chatuh-Shloki-Manu…

“South Asia” is an ahistorical Cold War term. Even two thousand years ago Greeks were writing Indica not “South Asianka.” If you are so desperate to be counted as part of India you can just call it Greater India or Akhand Bharat. Why let the CIA define your “heritage”?
I get why fobs get mad at “South Asian” but if you’re born in America and get mad at it you’re beyond help. Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, etc. intermarry and intermingle freely in the US. What else you want to call us you want to assign me a caste too?

1. As an Aryasamaji and a non-believer in smritis, tantras and puranas, Shri Ramdev is not an adhikari for this work in any capacity. 2. In the past, such work was often commissioned by kshatriyas for specific texts followed in their rajya with clearly stated objectives. RSS & its affiliates are not their substitutes. 3. Based on a general reading of the political trends in independent India, it can be safely inferred that the sole purpose of this exercise is to purge the shastra of all that is incompatible with social justice ideas and Ambedkarite demands. 4. Many temple corridors are being constructed in blind haste to boost tourism. Many shastras have an accurate description of all the sacred spots that are now dilapidated, neglected and forgotten. This exercise threatens the legitimacy of age old pilgrimage circuits and gupt sthalas. Eg the authenticity of the akshayavat in Kashi was questioned after they bulldozed it. You will be surprised to know how intricately a sacred kshetra is described in puranas and tantras. What if a verse that describes an important yogini temple in Kamakhya kshetra is declared to be an interpolation?
Why it this a problem?

Trigger warning: Brahminical apologetics and savarna superstition. 'Dharma has a marketing problem' is a common notion among Hindus perplexed by the lack of reception to what they've come to believe is the obvious truth - that Dharma is the answer to all modern maladies. Therefore, they advocate 'packaging it better', which is not problematic in itself, but is a quick slide away from 'dropping the baggage' aka purging Dharma of all that is inconvenient. I think that the notion that 'Dharma has a marketing problem' is fundamentally erroneous because it misses the wood for the trees. Dharma has two broad components: Sāmānya Dharma (universal rules resembling commandments for all) and Viśeṣa Dharma (context based duties for specific identities or groups). Sāmānya Dharma defines the boundaries of civilised living and is mostly expressed in the form of general prescriptions and prohibitions. Viśeṣa Dharma is the context specific response to life's moral challenges and it properly defines the duties of an individual. An individual's svadharma is the sum total of Sāmānya and Viśeṣa Dharma. Other than highly specific and narrow moral dilemmas, Viśeṣa Dharma is mostly about what to do based on who you are, which raises the question of who you really are. If we go by 21st century cutting-edge wisdom, you are who you want to be. Man, woman, both, none, dog, cat, ceiling fan... whatever you fancy. But our primitive and allegedly oppressive ancestors settled for a more concrete definition based on empirical facts of existence - birth and death - and since death was certain yet elusive, birth defined who you were because who you were in the previous life had determined your birth in the present one. The endless cycle of rebirth. So Viśeṣa Dharma as Varṇāśrama Dharma informs your morality and calibrates your conscience according to the long arc of your personal journey as a jīva. Law, policy, education and economics also operate in the same framework and accept the shāstra (accumulated traditional wisdom) as the highest pramāṇa or means of knowledge. Whereas Sāmānya Dharma tells you what not to do, Varnāśrama (Viśeṣa) Dharma defines your obligations and duties based on your social identity, fulfilling which may not always be fun but will take you closer to the divine and benefit you in timescales beyond your cognitive limits. Dharma in kaliyuga does not have a marketing problem, it has a definitional problem as without Viśeṣa Dharma, svadharma becomes context-free Sāmānya Dharma, just a universal set of actions to be avoided or carried out by everyone. Uniform Civil Code. Rights, no duties. Conscience overrides shāstra and since it is informed by random life experiences rather than traditional wisdom acquired over millennia, it leads to chaos and conflict with others. No amount of packaging can help nor is time travel to the distant past possible yet. But for Dharma to flourish in 2523, it must be understood on its own terms in 2023 because it operates in timescales beyond our cognitive limits. A start must be made now because now is all we have.

And these guys wrote our "history". It is "their-story". Which is why I took up writing historical fiction. To put out "our-story".

An old and popular running joke in the archaeology field is something like this : "If you don't know what it is, it's for ritual purposes”. Declare it an "object of ritual or ceremonial significance”. This joke is to illustrate that if every unknown object has a ritual significance (without being able to attribute what the ritual is), then no object has ritual significance, and ritual is just a placeholder for not knowing anything. Just like physicists use dark matter to explain when the masses aren’t adding up as expected or string theorists inventing extra dimensions. For the eminent Darlymple school of archaeology, the joke should be : “If it looks like a Hindu deity, it is a tribal deity. If it doesn’t look like a Hindu deity, it is a tribal deity”. If everything is a tribal deity, then nothing is a tribal deity, sahib!! Clearly the idol of the Devi has 10 hands and what appears to an animal at her right corner (which is clearly broken). And what does it mean it doesn’t look “feminine”? @halleyji @Kalakavrikshiya
Love this mysterious adivasi-inflected piece in the Assam State Museum. It is labelled as the Mother Goddess Durga, worshipped locally as Burhi Gossani, but who knows what tribal deity it actually represents? Either way, it is a thing of great and striking beauty and simplicity

Indology is an evil enterprise and Indologists are enemies of India. Indians should roundly reject and fight them strongly. There are exceptions, of course, but the exceptions only prove the rule.

This is the standard meme being deployed all over India. Chhath Puja is not Hindu, Onam is not Hindu, Tamils are not Hindu, “tribals” are not Hindu etc. Why? Because to convert you must first cut the roots. Who defined Hindu=Mantra+”Priest”? Where does that come from.

"Those who say that caste and religious differences must first of all be destroyed before India can ever rise to the status of a nation, have very hazy and confused notions regarding the character and constitution of that nation. Our history has been different in many respects from the history of other peoples. The composition of the Indian people has been unique in all the world. Nations grew in the past by the accretion and assimilation of different tribes. This is an earlier process. But India has not been a mere meeting place of tribes, but a meeting place of grown up nations with developed social and religious lines of their own, and with original castes and types of cultures peculiar to them." - Sri Aurobindo.

Absolutely. Hindu religion is Sanatana Dharma in practice. To say 'post religion' is to say post Dharma. Enlightenment exchanged Faith with Reason in the Western context because religion there was a demand imposed from above. Of course within 2-3 centuries they realised the fallibility of instrumental rationality as well ith Holocausts and World wars. That is a civilization struggling with meaning as they are beaten by both God and Scientist, Fatih and Reason precisely because they don't have the harmonizing principle of Dharma. To say 'post-religious' in our context would be to say post-Dharma or post-sacred which is to import the trauma that is not even ours. Being inspired by creative flourishing of Europe during enlightenment is one thing, to not discern the ontological void and import entire categories with glee is another. The latter is to internalise the Abrahamic gaze on ourselves. We are a sacred knowledge system oriented culture, it can encompass the material. The other way is not possible.
"modernist, pro-India, anti-woke, anti-socialist, anti-Dehat and post-religious?" "Modernist and post-religious" produce demographic suicide. We are here because our ancestors had faith, no not the "spiritual but not religious" kind, I mean real faith. And then AI, which ends our intellectual pretense. What is left that is truly human? I suggest Nature, Nurture, Culture and Scripture; the core of Sanatana Dharma is that all of these are connected. Anyway I will make this prediction: religion will become even more important in the post-AI landscape.
