An inspection cover has emerged in a back garden where we hadn't it expected it, & I thought the branding might help with figuring out the complex drains on our side of the street. Eventually read the weathered lettering to read
INSPECTION COVER AIR TIGHT
a bit niche this, but when i was a kid i used to collect stuff for their stories, and one of my proudest accessions was a Thomas Crapper inspection cover, big cast iron thing. Didn't go down well with the family & it somehow disappeared. I now discover it would fetch a tidy sum

Just finished Tom Overton’s remarkable fabulous biography of John Berger. Half way through I knew I’d read it again, now about to do. Train ticket as bookmark. Watching Ways of Seeing with my mum is the only memory I have of her in which I felt any sense of communion

I've been playing Stonehenge tourist. It's 13 years since the present arrangements opened. There's scope for change. Such as
1. The path past the Heelstone's a mess. Why not pave it like the path by the stones? The latter follows a recent track, the former a road. No archaeology
The Joy of Wrecks
A headline I wished I'd thought of for British Archaeology

I see from the Antiquaries' Salon that apparently Chris Musson MBE has died. He would I think be 90, a digger (notably at South Cadbury), a formative figure in excavation, understanding prehistoric architecture, aerial photography, and establishing the Welsh Archaeological Trusts
Except we got to see Tut. "Booking has now ended"
In the @britishmuseum tapestry queue. On website figures my current estimate is getting there in 25 hours. The modern equivalent to queuing in the street with my mum to see Tutankhamun, me clutching an Evening Standard special colour supplement (kept it but lost in a house move)

Tim doesn't name it but this is the Bury, Bishopstrow, near Warminster. Highlighted in British Archaeology in 2019 (when I wondered if an enclosure on Pantawick Hill above Marlborough might also be neolithic)
RIP Michael Cremo

The inspector approved closing the A344, but not BOATs (byways open to all traffic). Wiltshire Council had hoped for more control over BOATs: they are their responsibility (they pay the bills), not English Heritage’s. Accusations of EH profiteering are irrelevant nonsense
It’s not a principal of the world we live in that any group of people can assert a right to go anywhere. You can’t drive and park on the grass in Hyde Park. You can’t put your camper van anywhere you like in a national park. I can't reverse my car in my neighbour’s garden.
