I do wish @BBCNews wouldn’t keep referring to calls for reparations for “the slave trade”. The “trade”/trafficking of people was just the tip of the iceberg. Reparations are being claimed for generations of people born into captivity & mercilessly worked, often to death, too.

A chink of light - “we are offering a structured dialogue with those affected by the transatlantic slave trade. Listening to calls for a formal apology on behalf of the British state will form an important part of this process, and I am open to them.” theguardian.com/commentisfre…

Rather than writing off a loan to the British Council why not write off some of the debt that absorbs 37% of Jamaica’s government spending, preventing investment in health care? Reparative discussions with CARICOM might yield more effective “soft power”? theguardian.com/politics/202…

My friend Ben Moser is on such a roll at the moment....
Piers Morgan: What was it you were smirking about? Moser: I was actually laughing... A recently founded settler colony, Israel, which was founded in living memory... ranting at an Iranian, saying that his country is fake, Iran, one of the most ancient countries in the world.

Alex Pretti's father: Our son was shot and killed by the government, federal immigration agents, on January 24th, 2026. We learned about his death from the media as we saw him being shot repeatedly in the back after helping a woman from his community. This was not a protest that Alex was at. His hands were in the air, and his face was on the ground when he was executed by ICE agents. We know exactly what our eyes saw. No one from the federal government called us on that day. But they did go on TV to tell lies about Alex. No one has called us since. No one has recanted those lies.

Britain’s food security problem goes further back than Brexit to 1964. Think of the economy as a wildlife 🦁 park. After the war, Britain put fences around strategically important food production. We understood that farmers needed to remain viable because the country needed to eat. Then in 1964 we increasingly embraced the idea that removing the fences and exposing everything to ever fiercer competition would make everything cheaper. EU membership subsequently kept some substantial fences around agriculture through the CAP, common standards, market protections and a huge neighbouring market. But Brexit removed many of those fences. And now we’re feeding more and more of the wildlife park to the lions 👉the corporations and enormous pools of capital with the scale to survive conditions that smaller businesses cannot. But eventually the lions run out of things to eat. The independent shops disappear. The family businesses disappear. The farms and farmers disappear. Ownership concentrates. Competition diminishes. Communities hollow out. Eventually you have created a desert. A resilient economy is an ecosystem. If policy allows its most powerful inhabitants to consume everything else, eventually there is very little life left to sustain it.
🚨 🚩 The Brexit earthquake didn’t begin in 2016, it began in 1964. That year, Britain 🇬🇧 scrapped Resale Price Maintenance. A huge political earthquake that everyone has forgotten about. It was sold as giving consumers lower prices. What it actually did was shift power dramatically from manufacturers and small producers to giant retailers. Tesco and the supermarkets won big. Independent shops, high streets, and primary producers (including farmers) began a long, slow decline. This was the moment we started prioritising cheap imports and corporate scale over domestic production and resilience. The foundations of today’s broken food system, where farmers are squeezed and we rely on fragile global supply chains were laid then. Brexit was the latest tremor in a 60-year earthquake. The end of high streets and the hollowing out of British industry didn’t start with Brexit or EU membership, it began in 1964 when Resale Price Maintenance was scrapped. That decision empowered giant retailers to undercut everyone else, shifted power away from producers, and encouraged reliance on cheap imports. We lost the ability to protect and nurture our own manufacturing and farming base. This resulted in a consumer economy that worked while we were rich but left us vulnerable when times got harder. We don’t make enough, we can’t afford to make enough, and food security is now at risk.

Six years ago, Yaxley Lennon harassed Byline writers Mike Stuchbery and Tim Fenton so badly that they eventually left the country. (He also promised to pay me a visit!) Anyone condoning these kinds of tactics doesn't believe in a free press. It's a license for thuggery.
Tommy Robinson has been found guilty - it is my view that the system has, again, treated him unfairly. We live in dark times.

I can't find words. Dnipro 💔 A railway platform is covered in people's bodies after a Russian strike. Russia started this war. Russia continues killing Ukrainian civilians every single day. Russia won't stop until it is stopped.
Dnipro. Oh my God. At least 13 killed in Dnipro - a Russian drone hit a train close to the central railway station. Many more injured. Looks like it was a deliberate Russian strike, not an accident.

Farage lies outright here about the role of Raheem Kassam. He was his UKIP head of staff, and considered running for the leadership. He isn’t “someone in America” but his close advisor
Car crash alert 🚨 Sally Nugent asks Nigel Farage about Raheem Kassam's “Nigerian scammer” comments on Kemi Badenoch and his response is painful to watch. #bbcbreakfast

"Q. How democratic is the Israeli vote – and who is being disenfranchised? A: About 15 million people live in areas under Israeli control. Just over 7 million Jewish Israelis and 1.7 million Palestinian citizens of Israel live within the country’s pre-1967 borders, known as the “green line”, and have full voting rights. In the occupied West Bank, more than 500,000 Israeli settlers can vote. They live among 3.1 million Palestinians who are subject to military rule and do not have the right to vote. In occupied East Jerusalem more than 230,000 Israelis with voting rights live among 350,000 Palestinians who cannot vote. Two million Palestinians in Gaza, who live under Israeli military occupation, according to the international court of justice, also have no vote." theguardian.com/world/2026/o…
