OpenZ revives The Bitmap Brothers' 1996 robot strategy game in full 3D generationamiga.com/2026/10/…
Lets do it!!!
The robots from 1996's Z are fighting again, and they're still loud. OpenZ brings The Bitmap Brothers' classic RTS into 3D, with destructible battlefields, new units and frantic combat. It's free on PC. #OpenZ #RetroGaming generationamiga.com/2026/10/…
Who remembers this screen?
Z, 1996. No mining, no base building. Just grab the flags and hope your grunts can aim.
Did you ever actually finish it?
The MLRS says hello to everyone at once.
#RTS

Marked Z by PC Zone as excellent! Who remembers this old-school, undeservedly forgotten masterpiece? Earth 2150 was one of my biggest inspirations for a night-time in rts done right! One of the first 3D RTS games to really nail nighttime atmosphere, with incredible lighting from vehicles and buildings. It was a huge inspiration for the nighttime visuals in my own game!
Anyore remember classic Z?
Z was such an odd one in the C&C and Warcraft era. No harvesting and no base building at all: every map was split into sectors, you grabbed them by touching the flag, and the more ground you held the faster your factories pumped out robots and tanks. Lose a couple of flags and the whole match could flip in a minute. Plus the robots had real personality, the cutscenes with the cigar chomping commander were half the fun.
Steel Soldiers later went much more traditional, and I always felt the original idea never got a proper successor. Did anyone here play it back then? Would that territory-instead-of-resources design still work in a modern RTS?
For anyone curious, there is a free open-source 3D fan remake of it called OpenZ, made in unity, a fully 3d game, which just got its 1.2 update (you can now finally play the blue side): github.com/playopenz/OpenZ
