Polymarket hack timeline
just a compromised JavaScript component running on Polymarket's website
here's what happened:
- the attack came through a third-party JavaScript component embedded in the website, not a smart contract vulnerability
- Hudson Rock researchers spotted a commit removing a DebugBear monitoring script
- BleepingComputer obtained a copy of the malicious script. it was designed to hijack active trading sessions
- the exact attack method depended on how users had signed in to the platform
- around $2.65M was drained from 995 accounts in just one hour
- the attacker converted the stolen funds into POL, presumably to make them harder to freeze
- Polymarket switched to cancel-only mode and paused its relayer to contain the attack
- the smart contracts themselves were never compromised
the main takeaway: in crypto, security vulnerabilities are often measured in money lost. and this was one of them.
