It is shameful that universities—and Oxford especially—have created such a culture of intimidation in which a single orthodoxy on sex/gender identity, abortion, Israel, immigration, race and empire is treated as settled. Disagreement is no longer engagement: dissent is treated as a threat. That is not education. And it certainly isn't the purpose of a university.

This was an insightful overview of contemporary issues and long-term developments. Broad agreement - serious engagement with heterogenous ideas is key for a healthy academic culture. Disagreement - can this culture be rebuilt or is harm prevention a more realistic goal?
