In March 1510, the Goringhaiqua crushed a Portuguese raiding party at the Battle of Salt River. They killed ~65 invaders, including Viceroy Francisco de Almeida, who died from a spear to the throat. It was a massive victory that delayed colonization for over a century

In our historical archives, it was on this day 5 November 1987 when ANC stalwart and Rivonia Trialist, Govan Mbeki was released from Robben Island Prison after twenty-three years in prison. His release followed a call for all political prisoners to be freed, as apartheid was dying.

My article in @dailymaverick today on the ANC's election campaign. It was hard to write, but there needs to be some frank introspection. dailymaverick.co.za/opinioni…
For many of us the ideas, history and the impact of the ANC in shaping society remain worth saving. And in fact I would go as far saying that the most organised & effective Opposition bloc exists not with the DA but rather within the ANC itself. Abandoning it would be a mistake.
S.Africans still predominately define their political choices primarily in terms of who they don't want. Mainly due to the fact that the opposition itself hasn't yet imagined a narrative beyond a critique of the ANC; mobilising 'against' as opposed to mobilising 'for' something
Not quite respite for us, but perhaps something alot like it.

In normal times, this would be an opportunity for South Africa to position itself as a marked destination for academics, students, professionals especially from around the continent and the broader subaltern.
Under the Earned Settlement model set out before Parliament today, the right to live in the UK permanently will no longer be granted automatically after five years.
Instead, it will be earned.
Under the reforms:
➡️The standard route to settlement will double from five to 10 years
➡️ People who enter illegally, including by small boat, face a wait of up to 30 years to settle
➡️ Care workers who meet the visa requirements will retain a five-year route
➡️ Higher earners on more than £50,000, skilled public service workers and refugees arriving on safe and legal routes will be able to settle in five years
➡️ Migrants who claim benefits face a 20-year wait for settlement
➡️ Migrants with a criminal record will be prevented from settling in the UK
➡️ Migrants will be required to meet A-level standard English to settle in the UK

Today's @CoderaAnalytics post by Lisa Martin shows that foreign holdings of SA government bonds remain much lower than their pre-pandemic peak. Codera is launching a new debt issuances model in EconData shortly that will make accessing detailed SA Treasury auction data available

SA’s revenue system hinders municipal services: Michael Sachs businessday.co.za/news/2026-…
Many in the ANC fought for democracy, not for the ANC to get into govt. The latter is incidental and I would argue has been hugely beneficial for South Africa - the ANC still represents the very best hope for this place - in spite itself. But the project was always bigger
Voter Education: No Correct ID, No Vote!
On 4 Nov, take your green ID book, smart ID card or valid Temporary ID Certificate. Driver’s licences, passports and photocopies will NOT be accepted. Check IEC if unsure! @GautengANC #VoteANC2026 #IamVotingANC #VoterEducation
There is a also a view - one which one hopes prevails - that the ANC should seriously consider not entering into coalition agreements (at all costs) and in fact may better suit stability of governance if the ANC went into active opposition. May suit the ANC itself
A group of ANC leaders believes it would make sense to form coalitions with the DA in Gauteng’s three metropolitan councils after the election. The concern, however, is that the ANC’s local leadership structures could rebel against such a move.

On 27 Oct 1917 Oliver Reginald Tambo was born.
The boy from Nkantolo became a teacher, a lawyer, and the leader who held the liberation movement together through three decades in exile, steady, principled and unbending, until South Africa was free.
His vision was never only about ending something. It was about building something:
“Our liberation is our responsibility.” - O.R. Tambo, Mazimbu, Tanzania, 1984
O.R. gave his life so that South Africans could inherit a future. Our work is to make sure that future reaches everyone.
Join us today in remembering O.R. on what would have been his 109th birthday.

As it stands - a week before the election - the ANC has not announced its mayoral candidate for Johannesburg. With National structures uncertain of how regional leadership would handle the process, we have a state of paralysis. Emblematic of a broader, normative stasis

Lopes: "It is one thing to be considered risky. It is quite another to be persistently mispriced. For decades, African economies have been assessed through risk frameworks that only partially capture their realities. The consequence has not simply been analytical distortion – it has been a material cost to development."
