The in-person panel on "Global/Transnational Japan" I'm organizing for the 2023 AAA Meeting in Toronto #Transitions has space for one more panelist. I'm looking for a non-ladder-faculty person (incl. post-field grad) who can add to the themes of our existing papers, which are:1/3
(1) Afro-Japanese encounters & youth internet culture, (2) Filipino caregivers in aging Japan, (3) musical worlds of Korean Hiroshima, (4) transnational sustainable seafood industry. Our discussant is Dr. Christine Yano at U Hawai'i. 2/3
If interested, please email me (address on my fac page below - I don't DM well sorry) by March 2 with a bit on yourself and your paper idea (no abstract, just 2~3 lines of description). Thanks. #anthrotwitter @AmericanAnthro @EastAsiaAnthro 3/3

UC senate faculty please RT and spread word: There is a common misconception that the UAW tentative agreements mean the strike is over. The strike isn’t over until and IF the majority of members vote to ratify - voting closes Dec 23. Please hold the line & don’t submit grades!

I'm a tenured prof in the UC system. Housing here is no joke, even to me. Can't imagine how much harder it must be for those more precarious.

When 48,000 UAW Academic Workers go on strike on Monday, Nov 14, senate faculty at the University of California have a legally-protected right under the Higher Education Employment Relations Act (HEERA) to respect the picket line. Some reasons + resources for showing solidarity:

A late announcement, but an edited volume to which I contributed a chapter
"A Historical Materialist Approach to Transnational Japanese Studies"
came out earlier this year. 🧵

(3) distinguish between what I call "neoliberal transnationalism" and "historical transnationality" to clarify the conceptual contours of the term "transnational,"
(4) leave some critical notes about the so-called diasporic intellectuals writing about Japan (such as myself),
"The Formations of Historical Transnationality across the Borders of Japan, Okinawa, the U.S., China, and the Philippines" has been accepted to #AAS2023 in Boston!
Great panelists: Leo Ching, Yukiko Koga, @MichaelRJin, and Daryl Maude (+me)!
Can't wait and see you there! 🎉🎊🥳
