🦉UWS Barn Owl Update: OWL ACCOUNTED FOR
All 7 owls (2 adults + 5 fledglings) were spotted on Sunday night.
They seem to no longer be using the water tank to roost. Feedings are taking place elsewhere according to @nycbirdalliance.
The owls appear to be adjusting to their new circumstances and have found alternative roosting locations (sound like true Manhattanites, if you ask me).
We’re hoping any further repairs to the water tank where the owls were roosting will be delayed one more week by @NYSDEC to ensure the owls’ safety, since a few were spotted perching on the tower last night.
Thank you again to NYC Bird Alliance staff and volunteers, and the many concerned New Yorkers who continue to monitor the Manhattan barn owls. OWL WE NEED IS LOVE 🥰

One of the UWS barn owl fledglings roosted in the open yesterday after its nest was destroyed. This young, inexperienced bird didn’t know to conceal itself and was mobbed by songbirds all day. Thankfully all five fledglings were later accounted for.

We’ve got a major police and DEC response to the owl water tower roof removal going on now at West 75th Street.
Officers are inside the building and Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal and Sen. Erik Bottcher are leading the response on the ground.

Despite orders yesterday from the NYS DEC to cease work on this Upper West Side water tank, several workers appeared earlier today and lifted this wood panel onto the top of the tank and did other work. The DEC is here again.

What was lost: one of the UWS barn owl parents checking on their nest a couple nights ago (above) and doing the same with what little remained of it tonight (below). After a stressful day and early evening, the family reunited and all owlets were accounted for.

Multiple groups are out around West 75th Street looking for a sight of any of the Barn owls in the aftermath of the water tower roof getting removed earlier today.

The NYPD is asking the Supreme Court to continue allowing states and localities to ban assault weapons.
It says cops’ jobs would be “much more difficult and fraught” if the High Court finds assault weapons bans unconstitutional.
