77 years old. And about to leave Earth for the second time. On this day in 1998, John Glenn climbed aboard Space Shuttle Discovery and returned to space. Nearly 37 years earlier, he'd become the first American to orbit Earth. Now he was back, making history as the oldest person ever to travel into space at the time. And this wasn't just a joyride. Glenn was helping NASA investigate the effects of weightlessness on the ageing body. Imagine being strapped into that shuttle at 77, hearing the engines roar and knowing you're about to leave the planet again. What an extraordinary life. Be honest, would you have taken that trip at his age?

26 years ago today, U2 pulled off one of the great rock comebacks. On 30 October 2000, they released All That You Can't Leave Behind. After spending much of the 90s experimenting with their sound, they went back to basics. Beautiful Day. Elevation. Stuck in a Moment. Walk On. Four songs that helped turn the album into a worldwide success, selling around 12 million copies. And the timing of this anniversary is brilliant. U2 have just announced a special BBC concert, with their first new studio album in nine years arriving on 13 November. Nearly 50 years together, and they're still finding reasons to keep going. For me, Beautiful Day still sounds fantastic. Which song from this album would you play first?

Only Rockstar could make dog shit a selling point. New GTA 6 gameplay has appeared in South Park, and it shows a bloke getting battered with a bag of dog poo. Years of development, stunning graphics, a massive open world. And that's the bit they showed us. Brilliant.
Here’s the FULL GTA 6 gameplay footage exclusively shown in the latest South Park episode in HD.

Imagine being 18 years old and walking into your first NBA game with the whole world watching. On this day in 2003, LeBron James made his Cleveland Cavaliers debut against Sacramento. 25 points. 9 assists. 6 rebounds. And he wasn't even old enough to buy a beer in America. The Cavs lost that night, but everyone knew they'd just watched something special. 23 years later, he's the NBA's all-time leading scorer, with a career that's lasted longer than most players could ever dream of. Whatever side of the LeBron versus Jordan debate you're on, that's some achievement. What's the greatest LeBron moment you've ever watched?

These kids were halfway down the pool before the Olympian even touched the water. And somehow, that still wasn't enough. At an event called Sprint With The Stars, young swimmers get the chance to race against some of the world's best. But there's a twist. The children are given a massive head start while the Olympic swimmer waits on the blocks. Only when they're halfway down the pool does the Olympian dive in. What happens next is quite something. And fair play to those kids. They're giving it absolutely everything, racing against someone they've probably spent years looking up to. It's a brilliant reminder of just how extraordinary elite athletes really are. Be honest, how much of a head start would YOU need to beat an Olympic swimmer?

45 years ago today, two blokes connected through a newspaper ad. The rest is heavy metal history. On this day in 1981, Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield formed Metallica after connecting through an ad in LA's The Recycler. Just two young musicians with a shared love of loud, fast music. From those humble beginnings came one of the biggest bands on the planet. 45 years later, they're still filling arenas and stadiums, with some of the greatest riffs ever written. Not a bad result from a classified ad! Metallica fans, you've got to pick just ONE song to play at full volume. What's your choice?

Four children left without an adult overnight while their mother worked in Las Vegas. The youngest, just nine, ended up in hospital after an accident. She reportedly arranged daytime babysitting. But who's looking after them at 2am? That's the bloody problem.

The White House has gone full caps lock again. MAKING. AMERICA. GREAT. AGAIN. Say what you like about Trump, the man knows how to keep a slogan alive. At this rate, even the White House coffee machine will be wearing a MAGA hat.
MAKING. AMERICA. GREAT. AGAIN.

Three years without Matthew Perry. Still doesn't feel right. On this day in 2023, we lost the man who gave us Chandler Bing. For ten seasons of Friends, his sarcasm, timing and those brilliant little expressions made millions of us laugh. But away from the cameras, Matthew was fighting battles most people never saw. He later spoke openly about addiction and wanted to help others going through the same thing. A new Netflix documentary about his life has arrived just in time for this anniversary. He gave us so many unforgettable moments. What's the one Chandler scene that still makes you laugh every time?

20 years ago today, this creepy little puppet was back causing nightmares. On this day in 2006, Saw III hit cinemas. Made for around $10 million, it pulled in $33.6 million in its opening weekend in North America alone. And here's a brilliant bit of Halloween timing. Two decades later, Saw is even inspiring a routine on Dancing with the Stars tonight. Not a crossover I ever expected! Those early Saw films were something else. Half the horror was trying to work out the twisted traps before the characters did. Which Saw film had the most unforgettable ending?

They held his funeral while he was still fighting the Nazis. Joseph Beyrle survived D-Day, escaped German captivity and joined a Soviet tank unit. He returned home and married in the same church where they'd mourned him. Try putting that in a film.
June 6, 1944. An American paratrooper jumps into Normandy in the dark and lands on the roof of a church. By the end of the war he had been declared dead, held a funeral he didn't attend, escaped the Nazis, and fought his way toward Berlin in a Soviet tank unit. His name was Joseph Beyrle. He's believed to be the only American soldier to serve in both the US Army and the Red Army during World War Two. Beyrle was from Muskegon, Michigan. He joined the 101st Airborne, the Screaming Eagles. His buddies called him Jumpin' Joe. On D-Day night his plane was hit by flak and he jumped early. He came down on a church roof, slid off, and lost his unit in the chaos. For a few days he fought on his own, blowing up a power station and cutting German communications. Then he was captured. Here's where it gets strange. A German soldier ended up wearing Beyrle's uniform and dog tags. That German was killed. When the body was found, the Americans identified it as Joseph Beyrle. The army told his parents their son was dead. His hometown held a funeral mass for him. His obituary ran in the local paper. Meanwhile, he was very much alive, being moved from one German prison camp to another. He escaped more than once. One time he and two other prisoners jumped off a train heading east. They thought they were heading for Russia and freedom. They got lost and ended up in Berlin, where they were caught by the Gestapo, beaten, and tortured. In January 1945, from a camp in eastern Germany, he finally made a clean escape. He went east, toward the gunfire. Toward the Soviets. When he found a Soviet tank unit, he walked out with his hands up, holding a pack of Lucky Strike cigarettes, and shouted the only Russian he knew. American comrade. It worked. He asked to join them. And they said yes. For about a month, an American paratrooper rode with Soviet tank crews as they pushed toward Germany. He used his demolition training. He fought. He was reportedly welcomed by a Soviet officer who was one of the rare women commanding a tank battalion. Then a German dive bomber attacked. Beyrle was badly wounded. He was evacuated to a Soviet hospital. Soviet Marshal Georgy Zhukov reportedly visited, heard his story, and gave him papers to get to the American embassy in Moscow. When he showed up, the embassy didn't believe him. As far as the US was concerned, Joseph Beyrle was dead. They held him under guard until his fingerprints proved who he was. He made it home to Michigan in April 1945. In 1946 he got married. In the same church where they'd held his funeral. Decades later, in 1994, he was honored at the White House by President Bill Clinton and Russian President Boris Yeltsin for serving both countries. And the last twist. His son, Joseph Beyrle II, grew up to become the United States Ambassador to Russia.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Joseph Robert “Joe” Beyrle had two sons. The elder son, Joe Beyrle II, served during the Vietnam War, but wasn’t a US Ambassador. That was the other son, John Beyrle. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Be…
