Unemployment is a policy choice. Accepting it as a perennial feature of the economy and an unfortunate but unavoidable situation IS a self-imposed intellectual handicap. It causes so much pain and devastation. We can choose differently: amazon.com/dp/1509542094/ref…

This is crucially important. We need to abandon the current inflation-fighting model where jobs and economic security are on the line.
How we fight inflation doesn't just matter for the economy. It matters for democracy. If government decisions leave people poorer, more indebted and less secure, we risk deepening the conditions that have emboldened the far-right. 🔗 My article for the @FT. Link below.

I'm very pleased to issue this paper by @LevyEcon research associate @r_bellofiore. Minsky is so much more than "The Minsky Moment" and much more than the Financial Instability Hypothesis.
Levy Research Associate, Riccardo Bellofiore journeys through Minsky’s work while asking not only how to stabilize an unstable economy, but what kind of economy we aim to stabilize. Read more: tinyurl.com/minskytour #Minsky #economichistory #hetrodoxeconomics @ptcherneva

Kindleberger is correct of course. Minsky’s analysis does not rely on irrationality and stupidity: financial instability comes, among other things, from the internal logic of capitalist enterprise.

Financial side of the AI boom is tied to private markets: Synthetic PIK, level 3 valuation, credit & liquidity “enhancement”, bypassing of leverage reg via “innovations”, embedded leverage, regulatory apathy,… are all growing. We are in for a replay of 2008 if we let this go on.

This is the first of several conversations on the topic. Next week we host a virtual talk by @tymoignee on the role of private credit in the proliferation of ponzi finance. Register to watch: levyinstitute.org/events/eve… and sign up for Levy news: levyinstitute.org/newsletter… /end

With our thanks to Rep @GregCasar for opening the event with a welcome message and @zachdcarter for moderating.
🧵 We just concluded our @LevyEcon Capitol Hill Series on the AI buildout. While no two crises are alike, our job was not to predict the next one but to outline the anatomy of a crisis. Hyman Minsky continues to be a guide for our analysis. 1/x

📷 Maya Jenkins demonstrated in great detail how fragility is intensified & risks are socialized through regulatory channels. 📷 Corey Frayer concluded with detailed data on the financialization of AI investment – a tall task when data is missing or very opaque. 4/x

Monetary sovereignty is what matters for debt “sustainability”.
The reason is a debt that France cannot backstop on its own.

After Anwar, now is Mehrling. Grave losses. Rest in peace.
Perry Mehrling, RIP. According to the History of Economics Society, Perry Mehrling died "Monday night from injury sustained in a fall several days earlier." He was Professor of International Political Economy at Boston University and, previously, longtime Professor of Economics at Barnard College. He was a highly esteemed historian of economics. Here is his homepage: sites.bu.edu/perry/ His last book: "Money and Empire: Charles P. Kindleberger and the Dollar System" amzn.to/47RVhJ2 "Charles Kindleberger ranks as one of the twentieth century's best known and most influential international economists. This book traces the evolution of his thinking in the context of a 'key-currency' approach to the rise of the dollar system, here revealed as the indispensable framework for global economic development since World War II. Unlike most of his colleagues, Kindleberger was deeply interested in history, and his economics brimmed with real people and institutional details. His research at the New York Fed and BIS during the Great Depression, his wartime intelligence work, and his role in administering the Marshall Plan gave him deep insight into how the international financial system really operated. A biography of both the dollar and a man, this book is also the story of the development of ideas about how money works. It throws revealing light on the underlying economic forces and political obstacles shaping our globalized world." Charles Goodhart: "The discipline of economics is balanced, somewhat unsteadily, between two legs, with the skill of the historian on one side and of the mathematical modeler on the other. In the second half of the 20th century, the tide flowed strongly to elevate the second leg and to diminish the first. In this delightful biography of Charlie Kindleberger, a charming and loveable man, Perry Mehrling shows how Charlie, in his chosen role, as an international monetary economist, fought against that tide, often unsuccessfully. Perry writes so beautifully that one would only need a smattering of economics to enjoy the tale; while if one is interested in the history of economic thought in international monetary economics, then this book is, of course, a must read.' amzn.to/47RVhJ2

Woodford was kind to reply to my FTPL Qs when I wrote my dissertation. I thought if he carried it to its logical conclusions, he'd get Chartalist/MMT results. There were irreconcilable assumptions but also openings for a conversation. Instead he's recognized for microfoundations.

Finding The Money is finally available free online: youtube.com/watch?v=x3TJFoQW… MMT shows how a country can leverage its monetary sovereignty to pay for large scale public investments in health, education, climate action... without bankrupting itself or inflation/hyperinflation.
