Just looking at the demographics of Silicon Valley I suspect we'll get "robot that can do a timing belt service on a mid-engine Ferrari" before we get "robot that can change the batteries in a jack-o-lantern".
I see how some people can watch flashy robot demos on the timeline and think with a shiver that the robot apocalypse is around the corner, but reality check: There is no robot in the world that can change the batteries in a jack-o-lantern. If you have a robot friendly door handle it might be able to walk outside, pick it up, and carry it back inside. The robot could open the drawer with your batteries in it, but then things get tough. Opening the package of AA batteries? Extracting a precision screwdriver from its case? Unscrewing four tiny screws that require a hard press and twist? Popping batteries out of the case? Yes, you could build and train a specialist robot to do that today, but there is a very long way to go to replace the full range of human capabilities. Near term doomer scenarios should stop at “secretly controlling humanity” instead of “wiping humanity out” 😀

Why yes, I'd love to pay almost $68,000 to put 22,000 miles on a pov-spec Range Rover.

“If you haven’t paid to use the feckin’ steps you’ll have to jump” youtu.be/HPyl2tOaKxM?is=Z1DM…
qual è una cosa sui nostri voli che è ancora gratis e che dovremmo iniziare a far pagare?

You've just died, the 6th picture in your phone gallery is what killed you. Dammit, Alaska…

I took this because I was somewhat surprised to see this at an airport with no commercial service.

"This one weird trick" final boss. (I think this also highlights the fact that a lot of FIRE folks have no idea what to do with their 50 years of retirement.)
This is the greatest post in the history of FIRE Reddit. Perfection.

This is completely insane, even before you get to the part where they’re considering retroactively violating people for flying under their SPE.
The FAA is pulling the single-pilot exemptions on older Citations. That covers the 500, 550, S550, 552 and 560 models: the V, Ultra, Bravo, Encore and Encore+. Once it's official, a single-pilot endorsement on those airplanes won't let you fly them solo anymore. You'll need a qualified second pilot. The CJs aren't affected. If you own one of these and fly it yourself, start working on crew now. Happy to talk through options with anyone in that spot. @HavenASG @flyinhighpod

Just used GPT-Astra to convince my wife I was right and she was wrong. We’re not far from time travel and nuclear fusion.

Awesome job alert.
I’m hiring my Chief of Staff—a 12–24mo tour as my right hand: in the room for our hardest decisions; then drive execution. Crush it, become a senior leader at Boom. Must be technical with enormous capacity to get shit done. Founders welcome. Find a quality way to reach me.

*decodes bit stream* “Wait, this is an audio file” *loads file* “We’re no strangers to love…. “
Whenever I look at a building wall with a random-seeming mix of two brick colors, I think about decoding it as a bit stream. Surely a university building somewhere has put something meaningful in the pattern.

8 pitch 5.13b… at least he put “rest” in quotes. Dolomites are stunning, though. Definitely going back.
Josh and I decided to take a “rest” day after the Marmolada - something shorter with less of an approach. We settled on C’est Plus Facile, a surprisingly cool 8 pitch 8a (5.13b) up this nice face right by the road. A bolted route with bolted anchors felt like proper vacation climbing.

I'm curious what, exactly, an associate professor of engineering expected to happen in this situation.
