Greenland ice cores show emissions dropping to roughly two thousand tonnes a year, the lowest since Roman times, because the accessible ore was exhausted and the plague killed off the miners and smelters. The result was a real shift away from copper goods. Rural people stopped using copper cookware entirely. Bone studies by Kaare Lund Rasmussen found it essentially absent from rural skeletons while townspeople still carried it. Copper is a cofactor for immune function, and deficiency causes neutropenia, weakens neutrophil killing, and impairs T cells and macrophages. Copper deficient animals die faster from bacterial infections. So the population the plague met was already running on empty. Here is the twist. Yersinia pestis does not need copper from humans. It needs to survive the flea gut, where copper from digested rodent blood rises fourfold during digestion, reaching around thirty five micromolar. The bacterium senses that copper through its CpxAR system, which triggers an oxidative stress response that helps it colonize the flea and form the biofilm that blocks the gut and makes the flea bite frantically. The flea is the copper battlefield, and the bacterium is built for it. In the human body the dynamic flips. The immune system pumps copper into infected tissue to poison bacteria, and Y. pestis counters with yersiniabactin, a siderophore that chelates copper and shields the bacterium from that toxicity. A copper deficient host has less of that antimicrobial copper to deploy, so the bacterium’s countermeasure matters less and the host’s defenses matter more. The result was a population with impaired innate and adaptive immunity meeting a pathogen perfectly adapted to its vector. The Black Death killed thirty to sixty percent of Europe, and the malnutrition was not a footnote. It was the amplifier.
