Rabbi Jonathan Sacks frequently acknowledged the significant influence of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory, on his precipitous journey: from a brilliant yet unassuming student of philosophy at Cambridge University to Chief Rabbi of the British Commonwealth—and his subsequent elevation to the role of respected Jewish thinker, moral philosopher, and educator to an indebted global audience. This essay documents the circumstances that facilitated the unique interaction between Rabbi Sacks and the Rebbe and records Rabbi Sacks’s reflections on the Rebbe’s influence on his trajectory. Though Rabbi Sacks—with characteristic humility—referred to himself in his reflections as “an unknown undergraduate student,” the special guidance that he received from the Rebbe over several decades is indicative of the exceptional gifts of intellect, empathy, and leadership that Rabbi Sacks possessed. How can we engage across our differences without compromising our values? Join AJC and @RabbiSacks’ Ambassador Daniel Taub, Dr. Tanya White, and Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Sinensky for the third annual joint program as part of the Sacks Global Day of Learning. Drawing on the teachings of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks and Torah learning, this conversation will explore what our faith and Jewish identity teach us about meaningfully engaging across ideological divides, and repairing relationships and peoplehood in an increasingly divisive world. Ahead of Yitzhak Rabin’s yahrzeit, we share Rabbi Sacks’ reflections on the courage it takes to pursue peace. Speaking at Rabin’s graveside in 1996, he recalls the message of a letter Rabin sent him shortly before his assassination.

“The citadels of liberty are houses of study. Its heroes are teachers, its passion is education and the life of the mind.” President @Isaac_Herzog quoted these words of Rabbi Sacks at last night’s opening ceremony of the Global Jewish Educators Summit in Jerusalem, organised by UnitEd and @IsraelDiaspora. He paid tribute to Jewish teachers around the world, particularly the winners of the Global Jewish Teachers Award 2026, whose exceptional work strengthens Jewish identity, deepens connections to Israel and helps shape Jewish communities worldwide.

President Isaac Herzog: “The great Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks zt”l once said: ‘The shofar reminds us of our ultimate destination, telling us how far we’ve yet to go.’ The Jewish people and the State of Israel have always known our destination and the journey we’re on.”
Wishing Shana Tova from Jerusalem to our Jewish sisters and brothers around the world.

One small act of kindness by Sara Kestenbaum changed a young boy’s life. As we approach Rosh Hashanah, this brand-new animation brings Rabbi Sacks’ telling of that story to life. The coming Jewish year marks Sara’s 40th yahrzeit. May her memory continue to inspire us to change the world, one life and one act at a time.

Rabbi Sacks, speaking in the House of Lords in September 2018: “Antisemitism, or any hate, becomes dangerous when three things happen. First: when it moves from the fringes of politics to a mainstream party and its leadership. Second: when the party sees that its popularity with the general public is not harmed thereby. And three: when those who stand up and protest are vilified and abused for doing so. “All three factors exist in Britain now. I never thought I would see this in my lifetime. That is why I cannot stay silent. For it is not only Jews who are at risk. So too is our humanity.”
