Recently finished Children of Strife, the fourth book in Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Children of Time series. Throughout the books uplifted creatures attempt to transcend their base instincts and adapt as a spacefaring, trans-species society.
In the new one, there’s a species of former sea creatures with intense sensitivity to personal space. One in particular finds himself captain of a crew of problematic “individuals” whose natures have gotten the better of them in clever ways.
The gender dynamics between spiders are a subplot explored throughout the series, but things come to a head (after many, many generations) in a particularly clever way in this one.
I find myself referencing these books a lot, with themes of posthumanism and transhumanism, and ideas that project well beyond AI personhood. Recommended!
There were considerations to dimensions in time space that I don’t think I’ve experienced before. Also, there was a thousand+ people locked in for 80 mins in the dark.
Last month, @higgsfield generously reset everyone’s monthly quotas, and I tried burning through a month’s worth of credits in a few days. One experiment was a group of people singing a range of notes.
Since then, I’ve been building tools for animatics and reusable prompt elements. The choir became a useful test: each video needed the right combination of pitch, timing, animation, and visual style for the performances to work together.
None of this was impossible before AI, but it would have been hard to justify the production costs just to explore a playful interaction like this.
