Elon Musk has been backing neo-Nazi parties around the world, interfering in elections and using his massive platform to attack anyone who doesn’t share his extreme right-wing views.

There are no easy answers. Some of the problems we’re seeing have played out over decades, and reversing them is going to take time as well. But we are seeing successful efforts by young leaders around this country and around the world to reinvigorate pluralist values. And what those leaders are discovering is that, when they listen to people and recognize their multiple identities and seek out common experiences and common values – they’re not just strengthening democratic habits. They’re also building stronger organizations and delivering better results for their members. That’s the power of pluralism. That’s how we’ll reduce the cynicism that is so prevalent in our politics right now. And ultimately, that’s how we’ll work together to solve the greatest challenges of our time.

I’m convinced if we want democracy as we understand it to survive, then we’re all going to have to work towards a renewed commitment to pluralism. The alternative is what we’ve seen here in the U.S. and in many democracies around the world – not just gridlock and public cynicism, but an increasing willingness on the part of politicians and their followers to violate democratic norms, use the power of the state to target critics, journalists or political rivals and even resort to violence in order to gain and hold on to power.

Left: Sky News report that Romania has canceled the results of an election after they declassify intelligence to show Russian interference Right: Four UK Prime Ministers, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak all refused to investigate Russian interference in Brexit because all four of them used Brexit to become Prime Minister - self interest above the security of our nation and our democracy Romania protected it's democracy while the UK allowed Russian interference to damage our country economically, socially, culturally with Brexit, making us poorer, weaker, and also damaging the EU at the same time

A shocking situation to be put in.
1. I don’t often tweet about my personal life, but on 1st November, my mum Jane was hit by a large vehicle as a pedestrian in St. Louis, USA. She suffered a severe brain injury & remains in a coma in hospital. Here's Jane & me in happier times.

A developer wants to destroy one of the last remaining riverside meadows beside the Roding in London. 11 acres of rapidly rewilding meadow, a haven for nature in an urban area, where kingfishers nest, kestrels & bats take flight & all manner of insects, butterflies & amphibians live, is proposed to be bulldozed to create a crazy golf course. This despite the fact that there are already *two* existing golf courses within a few hundred metres of this site! The meadows used to be a publicly accessible playing field, but the person behind the development appears to have locked it up & allowed rubbish & flytipping to proliferate to make this site look ugly & unused; & thereby justify its destruction. I have been helping local residents to organise a campaign to ‘Save the Roding Meadows’ & they’ve done so much in a short space of time. Last weekend, they showed the power of community & organised a work day to do the landowners job for them and clean up the large amount of rubbish in the meadows. You can help them in their efforts by taking a moment to share this post and sign and share their petition: change.org/p/wanstead-park-w… If you live anywhere locally (in LB Redbridge or along the Roding) any additional objections to the local authority would be really helpful. The application is below, & you can use this link to log objections via the portal. The deadline is this Friday (4th October): planning.redbridge.gov.uk/re… Residents have compiled an example letter setting out the key objections at this link. Feel free to use, but personalised letters are preferable if at all possible: docs.google.com/document/d/1… Fingers crossed that the depth of care felt by local people for nature can save this irreplaceable meadow from destruction.

If you want to understand the true impact of removing trees, try our new Ready Reckoner - bristoltrees.space/trees/Rec…. Just input either the tree's stem diameter or girth and hit Return. The calculations are done automatically, though you can set some of the parameters.

We looked at 12 applications where 2,116 trees were impacted, 612 of which will be removed. Overall, canopy was 41% of their Biodiversity Net Gain area. If all are replaced using BNG with a 10% gain, then 1,925 new trees covering 7.8 ha will be needed to replace those lost.

An example of the excellent Twittering of @MichaelTakeMP who the Daily Mail decided to quote in one of their articles 😂😂
Delighted to see that The Daily Mail has had the good sense to quote me regarding the government’s sensible idea to disperse sewage in coastal waters in a safe manner whilst beaches are empty. The Daily Mail continues to be an example of rigorous & well researched journalism.👍

On my last visit to KL this eatery was only partially built. The sympathetic incorporation of a mature tree is notable, but far from unique here. Nature doesn't have to be treated as an enemy! @JeremyDBarrell @paulpowlesland @StagNews2022 @TiCLme @TheSadSquirrel #SaveSheffTrees

The #UKGovernment needs to act to curb unnecessary fellings. We need a presumption towards #treeretention, stronger enforcement powers and more enlightened urban design education that drives environmentally proactive architectural practice @SaHreports @Abtisam_Mohamed @msalilla
